How to Install GIMP Image Editor in Ubuntu 10.04 - 10.10

GIMP is a powerful image editor application specially used for creating images and editing photographs.It is an open source and free software provided by GNU ,and good substitute for another popular Image editing software Adobe Photoshop.GIMP is a crossplatform application i.e it is available for all major operating systems like Linux based OS(Ubuntu,Fedora..) and Windows.Additional plugins are also available for GIMP to extend its features.It has all the necessary features like other image processing programs.In Ubuntu 10.04 you can install it in many ways either from ubuntu shell or package manager or you can manually download(debian package) it from its website(Although that is not recommended for ubuntu 10.04 users) to install.


Installing GIMP(GNU Image Manipulation Program) in Ubuntu 10.04-10.10

From Ubuntu Terminal
1.Open terminal(hit CTRL+ALT+T or Applications->Accessories->Terminal)
2.Use the following command to install GIMP;It may ask you to enter sudo password then enter your login(Ubuntu 10.04 Account) password.
$ sudo apt-get install gimp
3.Wait for downloading and installation to complete.It may take few minutes.
4.That’s all.. now,you can access GIMP from Applications->Graphics->GIMP Image Editor.


From Ubuntu Software Center or Synaptic Package Manager(SPM)

1.Open Ubuntu software Center or SPM and search for gimp.
2.Then click to install(Software Center) or mark it for installation(SPM) and then apply to install.
3.Wait until the download will finish and installation will begin automatically.Within few minutes installation process will also complete.
4.To Run GIMP,Go to Applications->Graphics->GIMP Image Editor.

Installing LXDE in Ubuntu 10.04-10.10

#1. Open Synaptic Package Manager(from System->Administration->SPM) and enter your login password if required.


#2. Then,Search for ‘lxde’ and the mark the first row for installation.Click on ok to select dependencies.


#3. Next,click on Apply and wait for the installation to complete(It will only take a couple of minutes).


#4. Now,you have installed LXDE desktop on Ubuntu 10.04 lucid lynx.To use lxde logout from the current session and select lxde desktop from dropdown menu located below the screen.That’s All.

Install Skype from Synaptic Package Manager

1.Open Package Manager(System-Administration-Synaptic Package Manager).

2.Type skype in the search box ..then mark the box(skype) to install.

3.Click on Apply to begin the downloading and installation process.

4.Wait for few minutes;When the downloading will finish the installation will begin automatically and will finish within few minutes.

5.You are done!!


Install Skype From Command Line – Terminal

Open terminal in Ubuntu 10.04(LTS) from Applications->Accessories->Terminal OR hit CTRL+ALT+T.Then enter the following command to install.There are many ways to install ..If you have download the Deb File already from it’s website then just open the file then open the *deb file with Gdebi package Installer(Either by Double clicking on it or from command line).Another simple way is to run the following command -

On Ubuntu 10.10(Maverick Meerkat) MySQL(server/client) Database Management System is recommended because it’s free,open source,fast and easy to install.MySQL is one of the most widely used DBMS specifically for web development.PHP+MySQL is a De Facto standard for creating dynamic websites.The most widely preferred cms(Content Management System) i.e wordpress(This blog is also running on wordpress) also uses PHP+MySQL to generate dynamic pages.


Installing MySQL in Ubuntu 10.10

#1. Open Synaptic Package Manager and search for ‘mysql’ or ‘mysql 5’ and select the packages(client and server) you need.


#2. Then click on Apply button to begin the installation procedure.In the middle of the installation you will be prompted for MySQL root password,set strong password for MySQL server.You will need this password for logging to your MySQL server account,with administrative power.

#3. Next installation will complete within a minute.You can start using your server/client now.Open terminal and Type the following command :



mysql -u user -h host –p //Then Enter the User’s Password
In this scenario,the user is ‘root’ and in host use ‘localhost’;so the actual command will be

How to Install Ubuntu Control Center in Ubuntu 10.04-10.10

Ubuntu Control Center is developed(Inspiration is inherited from Mandriva Control Center) specially for new users or those who are coming from windows XP vista or 7 because it’s purpose is to control the system applications and programs centrally like Windows Control Panel.Since Ubuntu 10.04(Or its older versions) is primarily focused on desktop experience,that’s why the application management and administration may become much easier and more efficient after installing UCC(Ubuntu Control Center).


Install Ubuntu Control Center


step1 : In order to install ucc first you have to install another software(Dependent Software)-Font Manager.You can install font manager by using Gdebi Package Installer.First download the package(e.g font-manager_0.5.3_i386.deb).

Then install it by opening with Gdebi Package Installer or save it to your computer and later double click(Or right click to open with Gdebi Package Installer).It will hardly take few minutes.When it installs successfully then proceed to next step.


step2 : Now you can install Ubuntu Control Center.First download the appropriate package(e.g ucc_i386.deb).

Then install it in the same manner(described in step1) either by selecting open with Gdebi package installer or by double clicking on it.
You can also install it from the Command line.First Open the ubuntu shell/terminal and then go the directory in you have placed the .deb package.Then Apply the following command to install any debian(.deb) package.
sudo dpkg -i package_name.deb

Epic Web browser has just released – on July 15,2010.Epic is powered by Firefox.Epic came with a lot of exciting features.


Currently Epic is available for Windows only(*.exe) but it’s clearly indicated on the official website(of Epic) that – Epic for Linux and Mac is under development.So we will have to wait for the Epic’s Release -Debian Executable(*.deb) for Ubuntu.

If you are using Ubuntu and windows in Dual Boot mode(Ubuntu 10.04/9.10 wth Windows 7/Vista/XP) Then you can easily install epic on windows 7 for new surfing experience OR you have installed windows on Ubuntu by using Virtual Box then also it’s ok.For others(Those who have installed Ubuntu only) there is a quick ways to use Epic – By using Wine on Ubuntu.If you have installed wine then it’s ok just right click on the file and select ‘open with wine windows program loader’ to begin installation.In the second case,install wine first and then install epic with wine as described above.

Perl Programming on Ubuntu 10.04-10.10

Perl interpreter is actually installed from beginning on ubuntu 10.04-10.10.So just start writing programs.If perl is not installed on ubuntu then go to synaptic package manager and search for perl;then install the latest version of perl.Perl is a script type programming language.Perl has very wide application in web development.Usually perl code use very less space and time in compare to other higher level programming languages like C.
Run.. First Perl program on Ubuntu 10.04-10.10

1. Open Gedit and write a small program given below to begin.


print “Welcome!\nEnter the two numbers… to add\n”;
print “First Number\t”;
$num1=<>;
chomp($num1);
print “Second Number\t”;
$num2=<>;
chomp($num2);
$sum=$num1+$num2;
print”sum of the two given numbers = $sum\n”;


2.Save it as sum.pl or any file name ending with .pl.

3.Open Ubuntu terminal CTRL+ALT+T or Applications->Accessories->Terminal.

4.Change the directory(Use cd command) to the destination of file(sum.pl).

5.Type the command ..in terminal

$ perl sum.pl

6.Then your program will be executed(if no error is present) and it will ask you to enter the two numbers and it will calculate the sum.
