Installing RAR Extractor in Ubuntu 10.10

Open Ubuntu Software Center and search for ‘rar’.Install RAR compression/uncompression tool but remember it’s a shareware software so you must have to register after ending the trial period of 40 days.To install RAR tool just click on the install button(located in right end) and wait for the installation to complete(you may have to authenticate yourself by entering your ubuntu login password).
That’s All..Now you can select any RAR file and right click,then extract to the desired location.

Installing Eclipse in Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat

In Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat the Ubuntu Software Center is a good place to install and manage applications without any hassle,specially for beginners who don’t have any previous experience with GNU/Linux based operating system e.g Ubuntu 10.10.On the other hand if you want some more details about the package then Synaptic Package Manager is recommended.

Go to Ubuntu Software Center and search for ‘eclipse’ and click on install(see the snapshot) to begin the installation procedure.Wait for the installation to complete and then go to Applications->Programming->Eclipse to load the Eclipse IDE Platform.

Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat is scheduled to release(Final Version) on October 10,2010.Few Days before Ubuntu 10.10 RC version was released.Ubuntu 10.10 is the successor version of Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx.Few Days Before I installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my desktop computer,so in this post I will share some screenshots of Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat and it will give you a preview of Ubuntu 10.10.

Ubuntu 10.10 i.e Maverick Meerkat(code name) is planned to released on October 10,2010.Previous version i.e Ubuntu 10.04(Lucid Lynx) which was released April 29,2010.This post is aimed to explore some important changes and improvements in the upcoming version – Ubuntu 10.10.Here is the few remarkable changes -
Sound Menu

The Sound Menu has improved and it looks much better due to addition of some extra control buttons.Take a look at the Video(shown below),to see the changes in sound menu.




Software Center

Now it’s more easy to find new softwares in ubuntu software center due to some improvements.Software management also become more simple,you may like to see the video embedded below for visualizing the changes in ubuntu 10.10.



Compiz with Easystroke

Compiz provides a lot of 3D effects which make your desktop experience more funny.Easystroke is gesture-recognition application for X11 and provides an excellent interface for desktop users.Actually Easystroke was designed for Table PC but it works well with the mouse.You can have a lot of funny effects when both these application works together.Have look at the video.

Go to the official website and download a copy of Ubuntu 10.10.Ubuntu 10.10 is the successor version of Ubuntu 10.04.1 and released with a lot of improvements and changes.KDE based Ubuntu i.e Kubuntu 10.10 has released along with the Ubuntu 10.10.

Ubuntu 10.10(Maveric Meerkat) release date

Ubuntu 10.10 code named as Maveric Meerkat is the upcoming version of Ubuntu(A GNU/Linux Based open source and free Operating System).Ubuntu 10.10 Alpha 1 was released in June’s first week.The Ubuntu 10.04 Alpha was almost similar to the ubuntu 10.04 but the major changes will be noticed in it’s final release.Few more alpha(1,2 and 3) versions will be released in July and August 2010.Beta,RC(Release Candidate) and Stable or Final Version is scheduled on the following date(In UTC Time)-

How to Install GIMP Image Editor in Ubuntu 10.04-10.10

The aim of this post is to explain you how to install gimp save for web plugin on ubuntu 9.04/9.10/10.04/10.10.After reading this post you can easily optimize or compress images in different formats – jpg,png and gif by using GIMP(GNU Image Manipulation Program).GIMP is the most popular open source and free image editor;used by common users as well as by web developers.Due to exponential increase of web it’s necessary(not always) to optimize images for less bandwidth consumption and faster page load(This factor is very important if you are a blogger or web developer).

Install save for web plugin in GIMP

#1. I assume that,you have already installed gimp on your ubuntu.If this is not the case then first install gimp(if you don’t know how to install gimp,then go through the link given below and come back again here).


#2. Then Open Synaptic package manager and search for ‘gimp plugin registry’ then select the package by checking the box.This package contains extra plugins for gimp along with the save for web plugin.


#3. Then click on Apply to install it..wait until the installation is complete.


#4. Now, open any images with gimp and click on File->Save for Web;then choose the o/p file type(extension i.e jpg(Recommended for natural && photographic images),png(animation or computer generated images) or gif),quality-size settings(adjust according to your need,85 is default for jpg,you may increase it little but keep it less than 95),crop the images…after that save it.


#5. End of the FUN!!
