"Raised By The Railroad Line"

"Raised By The Railroad Line"
The clickety sound of the southbound freight
And the high-speed hum of a passenger train
Becomes a part of the soul and a heart and the mind
Of a boy who's raised by the railroad line
The sound of a whistle at the crossin' road
And the tanks and the trucks and the tractors on the flatcar load
Becomes a part of the soul and a heart and the mind
Of a boy who's raised by the railroad line
And the big round penny that you lay on the rails and the wheels mash flat
And a glimpse of the faces of the ladies
And the picture of the men in the engineer's hat
And the brakeman waves from the red caboose
He's a part of the past never quite turns loose
It's a part of the soul and a heart and the mind
Of a boy who's raised by the railroad line

The clickety sound of the southbound freight
And the high-speed hum of a passenger train
Becomes a part of the soul and a heart and the mind
Of a boy who's raised by the railroad line
And the big round penny...

"Let The Leather Crack"

"Let The Leather Crack"

There's years and roads and friends he'll never see again
He'll never hit that dust and feel them busty bones again
There won't be no more ladies shinin' buckles dancin' slow
When he packs his riggin one last time quits this rodeo

[CHORUS:]
And it's good-bye for good this time
He's gonna let that leather crack just like the past he's left behind
Growin' old Lord don't you know it's just a waste of time

He's quit rodeo before and he's come back again
Cause there's something in the ridin' makes the fallin' worth the pain
There's a pride in knowin' that you can take a chance
But its sadder when you finally find its never gonna last

[CHORUS]

So I guess he'll work some stable sweatin' hired out
To some young fool that ain't seen half the past he's leavin' now
That feller will watch him work just like he thinks he's half a man
And he'll spend his evenings dreamin' he could ride them bulls again

[CHORUS]

"Chisum"

"Chisum"
The blood on my sheets has soaked through the bandage
that they wrapped around the stitches in my side
These old country doctors have come to expect it
from the cowboys that come here once a year to ride
Now starin' at the ceiling I'm trying to get my senses
but I can't recall too much of yesterday
except for some cussin' at that bull we call chisum
as they turned us out of chute number 3

[CHORUS 1:]
Chisum, Chisum you're a big bad son of a gun
Your hide is tough and it's been scarred
Where spurs have dug in deep but never hung
Chisum you're the only reason that I keep on riding
And I'll ride you before my ridin's done

Someone's brought in the paper and I'm starin' unbelievin'
At the story that's laid out before my eyes
It talks about you chisum how they brought you up from Texas
And the cowboy that made a valiant 7 second ride
It mentions how you broke your leg when we went down together

And it talks about your horn in my side
But it's goin' on to say how they had to put you away
But it don't tell about these tears in my eyes

[CHORUS 2:]
Chisum Chisum I love you you son of a gun
Your hide was tough and it was scarred
Where my spurs had dug in deep but never hung
Chisum I tell you my ridin' days are done
cause after you theres nothing left to ride

[CHORUS 2]

"Paint Me Back Home In Wyoming"

"Paint Me Back Home In Wyoming"
She was painting a picture of slum life when the cowboy came limping by
Wearing tattered old boots with one sole gone and a far away look in his eye
Well he watched for a while as she painted and then he said mama you surely paint well
Yes you got all this on your canvas the dirt the squalor and the hell
Well she asked to paint him in the setting ah but he shook his head slowly and low
He said naw I wont fit your picture unless you can paint be back home
Can you paint me back home in Wyoming riding free neath the big sky above
Free as the wind on the prairie out in the hills that I love
I long to get back to Wyoming and I've hoped all these years that I can
Please paint me back home on your canvas paint me back in Wyoming again

Well I never claimed this festered city
You know I was raised on a ranch out in the west
I spent my young years bustin' horses and boy they said I could ride with the best
So I came here to Madison Square Garden to ride in the big rodeo
Ah but I got stepped on and all crippled up and chute bronc bustin' is all I know
Ah boy if I could just get back to Wyoming I wouldn't feel so alone
Ah but the pain is too much for the roamin' so please can you paint me back home
Can you paint me back home in Wyoming...

"Ain't Had Time To Go Home"

"Ain't Had Time To Go Home"

Well a bronc bucked me off up in Cheyenne Wyoming I broke me a couple of bones
My wife up an left me it must be an omen my destiny's being alone
I've been thinkin' of mama out a workin' the yard so I gave her a call on the phone
But I told her I've just been workin' so hard I just ain't had time to go home
Well I've seen Atlanta and I've seen LA and I've rode neath the big Astro Dome
And old Calgary seen a whole lot of me but I just ain't had time to go home

All daddy left was the watch that he carried the pocketknife he used to use
But a pawnshop in Vegas and the woman I married left me with nothin to lose
But I keep on a dreamin' bout a Cadillac car parked by my two story home
And in my dreams I'm a big rodeo star and mama knows I'm commin' home
Well I've seen Atlanta...

"Cowcamp Blues"

"Cowcamp Blues"

The moon is shinnin' down through the pines
And it spreads its light across the mountain side
And I wonder what you're doin' tonight
Yes I wonder what you're doin' and I wonder if everythings alright
Well I'm up on this mountain and you're there in town
Sleepin' in your feather bed and I'm layin' on the ground
I never knew that I could feel so lost and all alone
And singin' such a lonesome cowboy song

Well I'm just a cowboy I'm workin' all day long
At night I eat my beef and beans and then I sing this song
Yes I wonder what you're doin' tonight
Yes I wonder what you're doin' and I wonder if everthing's all right
Well I'm up on this mountain...

Now them calves are bawlin' and I can't get no rest
That cold wind's a blowin' and I'm freezin' half to death
Yes I wonder what you're doin' tonight
Yes I wonder what you're doin' and I wonder if everthing's all right
Well I'm up on this mountain...

It won't be long now and I'll be comin' down
And I better not find any rednecks hangin' round
Yes I wonder what you're doin' tonight
Yes I wonder what you're doin' and I wonder if everthing's all right
Well I'm up on this mountain...

"Lean Mean And Hungry"

"Lean Mean And Hungry"
Well I'm lean mean and hungry rude crude and dirty
The most folks that see me goin' down the road
I'm a bum and I'm lazy some think I'm crazy
But I'm just a cowboy tryin' to take that money home
Well I've been rodeoin' goin' and a blowin'
Up and down this highway searchin' for a dream
Someday I'll settle down right now I'm rambin' round
Cause I'm just a cowboy and that's all I wanna be
I ride for my wages to put food on the table
I gotta feed my family waitin' there at home
Oh you know I hate to leave 'em but Lord I need my freedom
But you know it won't be long till I'm comin' home
I ride for my wages...
I ride for my wages...

"Six Bucks A Day"

"Six Bucks A Day"
I've been ramblin' out Montana way
Tryin' to live on a cow punchers pay
Been changin' them dams in the new summer hay
Irrigating alfalfa for six bucks a day
I'll tell you my story I'd be on my way
But the savings are slow to come on six bucks a day

Out here in the fields while the water runs down
With the sun high above me and the sky all around
I'm dreamin' my dreams of the Canada line
And the places I'd go if the money was mine
I'll tell you my story...

Come Saturday night well you draw out some pay
Then you go into town just to throw it away
And when the end of the month comes rolling your way
Well you ain't got much left on six bucks a day
I'll tell you my story...

Now if I drew out my time and I paid off my debts
I couldn't get to Great Falls on what I have left
But I've got me no choice when them diesel horns blow
Come a wind from the highway I got to pack up and go
Yeah money or none at all they can't hold me this way
For my blankets are rolled and tied and I'm leavin' today

"Getting By A Quarter At A Time"

"Getting By A Quarter At A Time"
She's not a kid anymore she can hide her age in these dim lights
Waitin' tables in this bar ain't what she's lookin' for
The short years fly by but oh the long long nights
A bar tends to make a woman hard
Read a story in the lines beneath her eyes
As tips hit the table they jingle and they jangle
Get her by a quarter at a time
She's getting by a quarter at a time a diamond in the rough has lost her shine
Slingin' drinks at least will pay the rent again get her by a quarter at a time

Another man stands up to leave she's always been left behind
The change she's waitin' for keeps walkin' out the door
But her quarters are sliver lined she's danced to everybody's tune
But gettin' stepped on don't make her cry
But after work the jukebox brings a little tear drop
The memories cost a quarter at a time
She's getting by a quarter...

"Night Rider's Lament"

"Night Rider's Lament"
While I was out a ridin' the grave yard shift midnight till dawn
The moon was bright as a readin' light for a letter from an old friend back home
And he asked me why do you ride for your money and why do you rope for short pay
You ain't a gettin' nowhere and you're losin' your share
Boy you must have gone crazy out there

He said last night he runnin' to Jenny she's married and has a good life
And boy you sure missed the track when you never come back
She's the perfect professional's wife
And she asked him why does he ride for his money
And tell me why does he rope for short pay
He ain't a gettin' nowhere and he's losin' his share
Well he must've gone crazy out there

Ah but they've never seen the Northern Lights
They ain't never seen a hawk on the wing
They've never spent spring on the Great Divide
And they've never heard ole camp cookie sing
Well I read up the last of my letter and tore off the stamp for black Jim
And when Billy rode up to relieve me he just looked at my letter and grinned
He said you know I wonder why do they ride for their money
Tell me why do they ride for short pay
They ain't a gettin' nowhere and they're loosin' their share
Son, they all must be crazy out there
They ain't never seen the Northern Lights
They ain't never seen a hawk on the wing
They've never spent spring on the Great Divide
And they've never heard ole camp cookie sing
