Every night I go down to this same little joint
Fill up my glass till I reach the point past remembering
Where the music is loud the conversation is free
A dance or two with someone to keep me from remembering
The fool I've been the hurt I've caused the good woman that I loved and lost
For she's constantly with me in memory
I go home but I couldn't sleep and after hours I'd be walkin' the streets remembering
A good woman's love is hard to find and my woman's love was just that kind
And I'm the reason that she's gone today
I miss her so and the price that I pay is remembering
I take her to sleep in my dreams every night
Then start all over in the morning light remebering
The way it was when she loved me then like a fool how I carelessly
Broke her heart then watched my world fall apart
I'd give this world for yesterday just to have her love me the way I remember

Now the Georgia courtroom was crowded Ellie May took the stand
She was accusing the Reverend Joe Henry of bein' a no good preachin' man
Yes she was

She said the Reverend partook of my lovely body
The Reverend said Judge she lied
The judge said listen I’ll do the talkin' and the court's gonna justify
Yes they will

Well the prosecutin' attorney started pacin' the floor
Sweatin' and makin' threats
The fella sittin' next to me said I know that preacher's guilty
And they ain't even tried him yet

I said Son the Reverend Joe Henry's a good man
And he preached all over the bottom land
He spoke so a child could understand
There oughta be a whole lot more good folks like the Reverend Joe Henry
A preachin' in the bottom land

Well the judge called the court to order said defense will ya state your case
That defense lawyer walked to the jury box had a stern look on his face
One by one he pointed to the jury said the Reverend picked cotton by your side
He blessed your children the day they was born and he cried when your mama died
I seen him oh oh Lord God

Somebody cussed said hang him he's guilty the judge said now listen here
One more outbreak of emotion like that in this courtroom and I’ll just have it cleared
Yes I will

Then the foreman addressed the court said I've known the Reverend all his life
Said he got shot up so bad back there in the war that he couldn't even take him a wife
Now ya all know what I'm talkin' about don'tcha

Well I swore I'd never tell a soul but his life is layin' on the line
But there ain't no way on God's green earth that the Reverend could've done this crime

The Reverend Joe Henry's a good man
And he preached all over the bottom land
Spoke so a child could understand
There oughta be a whole lot more good folks like the Reverend Joe Henry
Preachin' in the bottom land

Folks Ellie May just folded like a chair fainted dead in her tracks
Ellie May I don’t believe I'da told that on him

But some dude walked up behind me and said kinda low

Big scrap iron piles and tore up cars in the front yard by the store
But the way old Rooster really makes his money is right out his back door

Well a way out back in a clump of trees there's a run down rickety shack
With a path runnin' to it where the grass won't grow cause people keep walkin' on back
Cause that's where he keeps his merchandise just pour it up ready to go
Sometimes folks have to wait in line just to get in ol' Rooster's store

Now Rooster Jones sells whiskey it's always in demand
The Talahatchie County dry law’s makin' Rooster a wealthy man
Big Rooster Son

Well now he don't sell to the rich folks cause they don't drink his brand
But the poor folks love old Rooster Jones he's everybody's man
The sheriff he is a righteous fellow ain't no better anywhere
But at the first of the month he tools on by just to pick up the county's share

Well Rooster Jones makes whiskey it's always in demand
Talahatchie County dry law's makin' Rooster a wealthy man

Awful son yeah gettin' rich makin' that tax free liquor
Makin' everybody happy
