"Patches"

"Patches"

I was born and raised down in Alabama
On a farm way back up in the woods
I was so ragged that folks used to call me Patches
Papa used to tease me about it
'Cause deep down inside he was hurt
'Cause he'd done all he could

My papa was a great old man
I can see him with a shovel in his hands, see
Education he never had
He did wonders when the times got bad
The little money from the crops he raised
Barely paid the bills we made

For, life had kick him down to the ground
When he tried to get up
Life would kick him back down
One day Papa called me to his dyin' bed
Put his hands on my shoulders
And in his tears he said

He said, Patches
I'm dependin' on you, son
To pull the family through
My son, it's all left up to you

Two days later Papa passed away, and
I became a man that day
So I told Mama I was gonna quit school, but
She said that was Daddy's strictest rule

So ev'ry mornin' 'fore I went to school
I fed the chickens and I chopped wood too
Sometimes I felt that I couldn't go on
I wanted to leave, just run away from home
But I would remember what my daddy said
With tears in his eyes on his dyin' bed

He said, Patches
I'm dependin' on you, son
I tried to do my best
It's up to you to do the rest

Then one day a strong rain came
And washed all the crops away
And at the age of 13 I thought
I was carryin' the weight of the
Whole world on my shoulders
And you know, Mama knew
What I was goin' through, 'cause

Ev'ry day I had to work the fields
'Cause that's the only way we got our meals
You see, I was the oldest of the family
And ev'rybody else depended on me
Ev'ry night I heard my Mama pray
Lord, give him the strength to face another day

So years have passed and all the kids are grown
The angels took Mama to a brand new home
Lord knows, people, I shedded tears
But my daddy's voice kept me through the years

Sing
Patches, I'm dependin' on you, son
To pull the family through
My son, it's all left up to you

Oh, I can still hear Papa's voice sayin'
Patches, I'm dependin' on you, son
I've tried to do my best
It's up to you to do the rest

I can still hear Papa, what he said
Patches...

"Patches Of Blue"

"Patches Of Blue"

I see patches of blue all the clouds drift away
Your love put the blue skies back in my lonely days
I thought the sun would never shine in this lonely world of mine
Then you came by now there's patches of blue in my lonely sky

Yesterday was gone still I kept hanging on to old memories
And constantly the past would haunt my dreams
And cloudy skies would seem to fill my empty days with such a lonely gray
A world without sunshine a world all alone
Tied to a mem'ry that still lingered on
Till you came my way now I somehow forget yesterday

And I see patches of blue all the clouds drift away
Your sweet love put the blue skies back in my lonely days
I thought the sun would never shine in this lonely world of mine
Then you came by now there's patches of blue in my lonely sky

"Pave Your Way Into Tomorrow"

"Pave Your Way Into Tomorrow"

Living for today is part of living for tomorrow
For tomorrow's something we all have to find
It's black on black at midnight so your faith must be the guide light
To erase the fear of darkness from your mind

You've got to pave your way into tomorrow
You've got to live and let your brother live as well
You've got to pave your way into tomorrow
And let your love of living cast its spell

Now gentle raindrops falling feed the streams that keep on growing
Till they build the raging river deep and wide
Now life is one big river so if each man is a giver
We might help to keep the ocean satisfied

You've got to pave your way into tomorrow...
You've got to pave your way into tomorrow...

"Phantom Of The Opry"

"Phantom Of The Opry"

Well I'm the Nashville Phantom
And I've been hangin' around
Saturday Night Live since 1925
When the Opry first came to town

I live in barnyards boxcars and freight yards
There ain't a honky tonk where I ain't been
Raised on goo goo bars moonshine from fruit jars
Born to lose but determined to win

I'm the phantom of the Opry
I discovered all the stars my friend
I am the spirit of country music
Keep those cards and letters comin' in

I gave Mother Maybelle her thumb pick
Carl Perkins his blue suede shoes
I taught Acuff to fiddle made Jimmy Dickens little
And I sang Hank Williams the blues

I showed Grandpa Jones how to banjo
Chet could pick but I learned him to grin
I laid howdy on Minnie made Stringbean skinny
And I'd do it all over again

I'm the phantom of the Opry...

"Plastic Saddle"

Well I've got a long black six passenger limousine
A palace in Dallas a club in New Orleans
Diamonds on my fingers silk imported clothes
And I can tell a fast train by the way she blows

Don't give me no plastic saddle let me feel the leather when I ride
Don't give me no paint and powder woman this boy likes to feel the hide
False eyelashes and a false foundation may build your pride
But don't give me no plastic saddle gal I like to feel the leather when I ride

I'm the cream of society a man about town
Never looked for nothin' that I ain't found
I ain't always right but I ain't never wrong
I know the words to the tune before you sing the song

Don't give me no plastic saddle let me feel the leather when I ride...

Don't give me no plastic saddle let me feel the leather when I ride...

"Pointer's Rock"

Well I can see Pointer's Rock I can see it from my window
It makes me think about you and the trouble you got me into
Can't forget you
Well it woulda been better if I'd never met you

Well you had your way of doin' things that's fine
But I got mine

Well I held nothin' back anything you demanded
If you had a wanted the moon and the stars
Well baby I'da done my damnedest to provide 'em
Till the day I found you layin' there beside him

Well I had my way of doin' things to you
But you did too

Up on Pointer's Rock high above the river
It was a cold and a windy night but I was too hot to shiver
You were callin’ my name as to the water you were fallin’

You had your way of doin’ things that's fine
But I had mine

Well now through these iron bars of my gray stone window
I can see sunshine people up on Pointer's Rock
And I feel my eyes grow misty
What's the good of life when you gotta live it this way

You had your way of doin' life that's fine
Now I got mine

Well I can see Pointer's Rock I can see it from my window
Lord God woman the trouble you got me into

"Pride Today"

"Pride Today"

Todays foolish pride could be tomorrows sad regret
The one mistake boy you might never forget
Which one was right which one was wrong
Could it matter any less
Ah but any fool could tell ya son
That pride has no place in real happiness

So run to her now boy and let her know
How much you missed her and still love her so
Cause chances are if you'll go that far
She'll more than meet you half way
Don't lose tomorrows happiness over foolish pride today

Always a big thing where young hearts are concerned
Is the lesson in pride that must be learned
So don't make tomorrow your lonely reminder
All of your happiness is gone cause you were too proud too long

Run to her now boy and let her know...

Come with me upon my rainbow ride
Let me share the love I feel inside
And if perhaps a little bit of color touches you
Then you can spread a little bit of color somewhere too

I would like to ride a rainbow for a while
I'd paint the world the color of your smile
The air would have the freshness of your breath upon my cheek
And love's the only language it would speak

And if I could paint the sounds of children ev'rywhere
Then I would choose the color of your hair
Shades of happy laughter they would flow in my rainbow
The world would see the love I've come to know

Come with me upon my rainbow ride...

Yes come with me upon my rainbow ride...

Well I'm a red hot picker I'm a six string tickler
I'm a finger pickin' whadda ya know
Well I'm a time bomb ticker a real bumper sticker
Stand back honey here I go

Well I met a little cutie a real sweet patooty
So I figured well I'll come on slow
I said my name is Reed and I got what ya need
Honey hang around till after the show

Well after about an hour of the Wildwood Flower
I had done slipped out of my thumb pickin'
When up walks a dude starts comin' on rude
And said son I'm wise to your trick

He said now listen here mister you're messin' with my sister
Made a two handed fist out of one hand
Well right then I discovered he ain't no music lover
And me I'm a travellin' man

Whoa I'm a red hot picker I'm a six string tickler...

I'm gettin' ready here I go

Well now some time later I met another sweet tater
I said honey I'm a hog about you
Just as I was gettin' bolder felt a hand on my shoulder
Turned around and he was six-foot two

He said I don't think ya oughta cause this here is my daughter
And there's one more thing son you might know
That if you ain't quicker than my big frog sticker
Then that's gonna be all she wrote

I said son I'm a red hot picker I'm a six string tickler
I'm a finger pickin' whadda ya know
I'm a buffalo nickel a solid dill pickle
Stand back cause here I go

"Redneck In A Rock And Roll Bar"

"Redneck In A Rock And Roll Bar"

Well hello boogie palace I'm sittin' here alone
A listening to the music of electric saxaphones
Now there ain't no sexy dresses and there ain't no beehive hair
Just boys who look like girls who look like boys who look like Cher

I'm just a redneck in a rock and roll bar
I miss the fiddle and a steel guitar
They're starin' at me like a bug in a jar
I'm just a redneck in a rock and roll bar

I stopped in here to have a beer to ask some gal to dance
Well I've been waitin' patient now and I ain't had the chance
Cause they ain't played any waltzes nothin' like a Texas swing
And with no belly rubbin' music how in the hell can I do my thing

I'm just a redneck in a rock and roll bar...

Well good-bye boogie palace I'm gettin' outta here
Back to country music and back to Lonestar beer
Where the women look like women and they dress so you can tell
And them men are good ole boys just drinkin' beer and raisin' hell

I'm just a redneck in a rock and roll bar...
