"Ireland"

"Ireland"

I met you on the beach in June
The bonfire burning bright
Friend of friends I’d known for years
Another summer night
You made room beside you there
Your toes dug in the sand
That distant summer when I found you and you
Found Ireland
The bonfire died, I drove you home
Sometime around three or four
We sat outside and talked and talked
Another hour or more
When you got up to go inside
I had our summer planned
That’s when you said that you were leavin’ that night
For Ireland
I hung around the beach that week
But nothing felt the same
And tryin’ to get started
Was another losin’ game
And why I felt so out of things
I could not understand
I only knew that you were gone; you were
In Ireland
I sold my car in Providence
To buy a roundtrip fare
And off I flew to Ireland
And hoped I’d see you there
They knew in O’Donoghue’s
Where you’d sung with the band
That distant summer when I found you and you
Found Ireland
They said you’d gone to Galway
Then you’d hitched to Donegal
McGrory’s up in Culdaff
Was where you could hear it all
Arlo was on the stage
When I slipped in and took your hand
That distant summer when I found you and we
Found Ireland
I fell in love with Ireland
I fell in love with you
And when you said you felt the same, well
What else could I do
Now all these years of lovin’ you
Has all been some sweet command
It’s summer now and once again we’ll go
Find Ireland
It’s summer now and once again we’ll go
Find Ireland

"Is This Any Way To Run An Airline?"

"Is This Any Way To Run An Airline?"

Oh, the airline ticket reservation counter lady
Is a very special friend of mine
When I asked her in the morning if my flight was ready
She assured me it was right on time
Oh, the taxi to the airport cost me seven or eight
And the porter got another buck or two
When some joker on the microphone said, “Sorreee
But we've got a little bad news for you”
It's getting cloudy up in Boston
Montreal is socked in tight
Washington is closed for Christmas
Philadelphia's out on strike
Minnesota's up to here in snow
And Tulsa's closed tonight you know
Please be patient five more minutes
Hope you have a pleasant flight
Oh, the airline passenger relations representative
Was very sympathetic to me
Just as soon as we completely overhaul your astro-liner
You’ll be airborne just as quick as can be
Then of course we'll need a stewardess but never you mind
We'll have one trained in plenty of time
Won't you settle in our astro-lounge in comfort
We'll be leaving at a quarter of nine
But the astro-lounge was crowded and the coffee shop was crammed
The coke machine was broken and they closed the hot dog stand
I couldn't find a magazine, they broke the cigarette machine
The shoeshine boy was sleeping, and my radio was jammed
Oh, I carefully examined every corner of the building
For the next fourteen hours or so
And the bulletins kept coming from the reservation counter
“Yessiree we're getting ready to go
For we're flying in another plane from London you see
Any minute now that plane should appear
You'll be leaving in a minute, providing
This little bit of nasty weather should clear”
For it's getting cloudy up in Boston
And it's snowing up in Maine
Los Angeles is hopeless
And Chicago's getting rain
You've had a couple dirty days
But your ticket's good for thirty days
And when the runway is completed
Would you like to board your plan

"It Ain't Easy"

"It Ain't Easy"

Everywhere I looked this morning
You were on my mind
Sometimes we have moments
When good news is hard to find
No one knows exactly
What another’s going through
But singing you these simple words
ls one thing I can do
Though it ain't easy
It ain't easy
The living and the loving
Are no easy things to do
It ain’t easy
It ain't easy
And that’s why I want to be a friend
For you
I know you lost something
That you loved with all your heart
I know how the grieving
Feels like tearing you apart
Just remember something
That might ease you through the pain
There are those who’ll carry you
Until you’re whole again
Though it ain't easy
It ain't easy
The living and the loving
Are no easy things to do
It ain’t easy
It ain't easy
That’s why I wanna be a friend
For you
Only you can understand
The load you have to bear
All a friend can offer
Is to try to take a share
Friends are all we have
And I just want to help you see
However hard it gets for you
You have that friend in me
Though it ain't easy
Though it ain't easy
The living and the loving
Are no easy things to do
It ain’t easy
It ain't easy
That’s why I wanna be a friend
For you
That’s why I wanna be a friend
For you

"Jennifer's Rabbit"

"Jennifer's Rabbit"

Jennifer slept in her little bed
With dreams of a rabbit in her little head
Jennifer's rabbit, brown and white
Left the house and went to town one night
Along with a turtle and a kangaroo
And seventeen monkeys from the city zoo
They went for a ride on an old street car
They tried to drive it but they didn't get far
They all got tired and decided to go
To see the people in the picture show
Jennifer's rabbit, white and brown
Looked in the windows of the shops downtown
He found a dress for Jennifer to wear
And a pretty blue ribbon for her long blond hair
Then the rabbit and the turtle and the kangaroo
Bowed to each other like polite folks do
They went to a shop where the cookies are free
And they all had cookies and oolong tea
Then, "My!" said the turtle as the clock struck three
"The hour is growing very late for me."
"Not at all," said the rabbit. "If you give me a chance,
I'll lead all the monkeys in a hula dance!"
So they danced all night and the moon danced too
Then the rabbit and the turtle and the kangaroo
Jumped into bed and closed their eyes
And were fast asleep before the sun could rise
And Jennifer slept in her little bed
With dreams of a rabbit in her little head

"Jesus Christ S.R.O."

"Jesus Christ S.R.O."

Jesus, you’re making it big on Broadway
Gosh, it’s good to see your name in lights
Singing them rock and roll songs, by golly
Bet you, you learned them from Buddy Holly
I bet you kept the Heavenly Choir up late at night
A-picking up a back beat
Jesus, you’re S.R.O. on Broadway
Told us you’d be back, but what do you know
A-wop bop a loo-bop, a-wop bam boom
Rolled the stone back from the tomb
And out came Jesus, starring in a Broadway show
Jesus, we needed you here on Broadway
Business wasn’t so good till you came through
Cecil DeMille made a bundle with you
But he never knew that you could boogaloo
Now let me tell you what we’re gonna do - for you
We’ll put you on a T-shirt
Jesus, you’re a very hot ticket on Broadway
Always knew you’d make it big somehow
A-wop bop a loo-bop, a-wop bam boom
All you ever needed was a couple good tunes
Jesus, I bet your Daddy’s proud of you now
Jesus loves me, this I know
Gave me house seats to his show
Oh, when the cash starts rolling in
Oh, when the cash starts rolling in
Aren’t you glad you signed up the Saviour
When the cash starts rolling in
Woh, glory to the box office
Jesus, you’re really the toast of Broadway
Spreading peace and joy on the old White Way
This time around you’re a little bit looser
All you ever needed was the right producer
Someone who could tell the Saviour what to say
A-be a-bop a-lula
Jesus, you’re the biggest star on Broadway
And what a proper superstar you look
A golden oldie, a blast from the past
It’s great to see that you’ve come back at last
And someday I just have to read the book

"Johnny Got A Gun"

"Johnny Got A Gun"

Johnny's mum and dad both worked long hours
And they worked on the weekends too
Johnny was eleven, but they had no notion
Of what Johnny was going through
Johnny got pushed and Johnny got robbed
And it made him feel chicken to run
Big kids picked on Johnny every day
Till Johnny went and got him a gun
Johnny got a gun; he didn't bring it home
He covered it with rags and dirt
On his way to school he looked both ways
Then he hid it under his shirt
Johnny was afraid of going to school
There was always trouble in the halls
Fights in the boys' room, guns in the lockers
Little kids bouncing off the walls
Johnny was afraid of dying young
Everybody he knew had guns
So Johnny got a gun
And every little thing looked cool
First time Johnny flashed his gun
Everybody backed off fast
Everybody treated him differently, then
Johnny felt safe at last
Johnny had a gun and everybody knew
A everybody left him alone
Till he bumped a kid who was coming down the stairs
And the kid had a gun of his own
Kid pushed Johnny; Johnny went down
And the kid had something to say
Pulled his gun; Johnny shot first
And he blew the other kid away
The police came and they took away the gun
Said he wouldn't need a gun any more
Took him to the station, sat him in a chair
And his feet didn't reach the floor
Johnny was afraid of dying young
Everybody he knew had a gun
So Johnny got a gun
And every little thing looked cool
Johnny had a hearing plead self-defence
Prosecutor said, “No way”
Judge said, “You're eleven, but you kill like a man
And it's gonna be a long, long stay”
Johnny's mum and dad still work long hours
And knock on the unit door
They sit with Johnny in the visitor's room
And his feet don't reach the floor
Johnny was afraid of dying young
Everybody he knew had a gun
So Johnny got a gun
And every little thing looked cool
And his feet don't reach the floor

"Jones Boy"

"Jones Boy"

I bought a car; a beauty
It was sexy, it was neat
It made me feel about ten feet tall
To turn the ignition key
I bought a brand new barbecue
And I put it in my yard
And every morning's mail
Brought another credit card

I am a Jones boy
Try keepin' up with me
I am a Jones boy
No way to keep up with me
I am a Jones boy
Try keepin' up with me
I am a Jones boy
No way to keep up with me

I bought myself Bermuda shorts
I bought a Nehru coat
I bought myself a turtleneck shirt
I hung beads around my throat
I'm right on the top of every trend
There ain't nothing I can't dig
Now wait until you catch me
In my brand new Afro wig

I am a Jones boy
Try keepin' up with me
I am a Jones boy
No way to keep up with me
I am a Jones boy
Try keepin' up with me
I am a Jones boy
No way to keep up with me

Now my refrigerator makes ice cubes
And for just nine-hundred more
It plays the hits in stereo
When you open up the door
My TV set is six feet high
And it also dries my hair
My telephone has a musical tone
To tell you I ain't there

And I am a Jones boy
Try keepin' up with me
I am a Jones boy
No way to keep up with me
I am a Jones boy
Try keepin' up with me
I am a Jones boy
No way to keep up with me

"Katy"

"Katy"

Oh, I have a little daughter, and my daughter's name is Kate.
And she's every bit mischievous as a kitten on a skate.
With a bandage on her forehead and the bruises on her knees,
You would swear she'd fought with buccaneers on all the seven seas.
For its up the stairs and down the stairs and in the room and out.
Like a miniature tornado, she can blow the house about.
Take an angel with the devil in the twinkling of her eye,
And that's my Katy, little lady, and I love her.

Now you might have heard of miracles, you might believe in saints,
But you'd never believe my Katy when she's playing with her paints.
For there's red upon the window and there's green upon her face,
On the wall, In her hair, but on the paper, not a trace.
When she's in her room and quiet, and there comes a little calm,
You develop the sensation that you're sitting on a bomb.
Take an angel with the devil in the twinkling of her eye,
And that's my Katy, little lady, and I love her.

My Katy loves her games, you know, and thirty times a week,
I find myself dragooned into a game of hide-and-seek.
So I found myself in closets, under beds I quietly creep,
And I wait for thirty minutes till my brain has gone to sleep.
Yes I sit there in the closet and it seems like half a day,
Till I find a friend has come to call and Kate's gone out to play!
Take an angel with the devil in the twinkling of her eye,
And that's my Katy, little lady, and I love her.

Now, you might have heard of daddies who would dote upon their girls,
Who get wrapped around their fingers by the tossing of the curls,
Who respond to hugs and kisses till there's nothing they wouldn't do,
Don't you ever believe a word if it, it simply isn't true.
For I'd only jump the moon for her, I'd only jump the sea,
For the hugs I get to give her and the kisses she gives to me.
Take an angel with the devil in the twinkling of her eye,
And that's my Katy, little lady, and I love her.

"Ketchup"

"Ketchup"

I bought a big tomato at the grocery store
And everybody wondered what I wanted for
I put it in the mixer and I turned the mixer on
It went around ‘round ‘round till I knew that it was done
It made ketchup
It made ketchup
Put it on a hot dog, put it on a burger
Put it on your sister and she’ll holler bloody murder
Yeah, ketchup
Yeah ketchup
I bought a dish of ice cream from the Good Humour man
I took it in the kitchen and I put it in the pan
When everyone was sleeping I came slipping on down
I took it from the freezer and I spread it all around
It made ketchup
Sweet ketchup
Put it on a hot dog, put it on a burger
Put it on your sister and she’ll holler bloody murder
Yeah, ketchup
Yeah ketchup
Nothing else will tickle my taste buds
Nothing else will hit me just right
A burger, a pup, I like to cover it up
With the slow and sloppy gourmet delight
I saw a nifty movie on the V.C.R.
They were fightin’ space invaders from a far-away star
Lots of laser beams and there were death-ray shots
And just to make it perfect there was lots and lots and lots and lots
Of ketchup
Yeah ketchup
Put it on a hot dog, put it on a burger
Put it on your sister and she’ll holler bloody murder
Yeah, ketchup
Yeah ketchup
Nothing else will tickle my taste buds
Nothing else will hit me just right
A burger, a pup, I like to cover it up
With the slow and sloppy gourmet delight
I bought a big tomato at the grocery store
And everybody wondered what I wanted for
I put it in the mixer and I turned the mixer on
It went around ‘round ‘round till I knew that it was done
It made ketchup
It made ketchup
Put it on a hot dog, put it on a burger
Put it on your sister and she’ll holler bloody murder
Yeah, ketchup
Yeah ketchup
Don’t want no mustard
Give me ketchup
Please pass the ketchup
