What is MTP?
MTP is the acronym for Media Transfer Protocol, which is supported by Andriod phones. If MTP driver failed to install, you won’t be able to transfer media files from or to Android devices.

How do I fix it?
Here are 5 fixes for you to try. You may not need to try them all; just work your way down and find the one works for you.

1: Rule Out Hardware Problem

Before we begin, we would like to make sure that your hardware is problem free. Please try connect your mobile phone to another USB port to see if the result is the same.

You should try to connect via both the rear and front connectors. If the result remains the same, please try connecting your other mobile phone to the same USB port to see where could be problem be.

If the above checks out that your hardware is problem free, please make sure you enable the debugging in the settings in your mobile phone.

2: Update the MTP USB Driver
If no hardware device is at fault, it’s likely that you’re using the wrong driver altogether.

There are two ways you can get the right drivers for your video card and monitor: manually or automatically.

Manual driver update – You can update your MTP USE driver manually by going to the manufacturer’s website, and searching for the most recent correct driver for it. Be sure to choose only driver that is compatible with your variant of Windows 10.

Automatic driver update – If you don’t have the time, patience or computer skills to update your video and monitor drivers manually, you can, instead, do it automatically with Driver Easy. Driver Easy will automatically recognize your system and find the correct drivers for your USB port, and your variant of Windows 10, and it will download and install them correctly:

1) Download and install Driver Easy.

2) Run Driver Easy and click the Scan Now button. Driver Easy will then scan your computer and detect any problem drivers.

3) Click the Update button next to the flagged USB device to automatically download and install the correct version of its driver (you can do this with the FREE version).

Or click Update All to automatically download and install the correct version of all the drivers that are missing or out of date on your system (this requires the Pro version – you’ll be prompted to upgrade when you click Update All).

3: Run Command
If you don’t have the administrator permission to your PC, you’ll fail to use some functions. To fix it:

1) On your keyboard, press the Start button, then type cmd.exe. Right-click cmd and click Run as administrator.

Click Yes at the prompted window.

2) In Command Prompt window, copy and paste in the following command:

net localgroup Administrators local service /add
Then press Enter.

3) See if you can connect your Samsung mobile phone to your computer.

4: Repair Registry Settings

Warning: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious, system-wide, unrecoverable errors to your computer. So before you proceed, please make sure that you have it backed up first.

If your registry settings are at fault, you won’t be able to use the USB device driver properly. To fix it:

1) On your keyboard, click the Start button. Type regedit and press Enter.

Click Yes at the prompt window.

2) Follow the path
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l/Class.

3) On your keyboard, press the Ctrl key and F key at the same time. Type Portable Devices and press Enter.

4) On the right hand pane, you’ll see the (Default) value Portable Devices on the string.

5) If you can see UpperFilters here, right-click it and click delete.

If you can’t see such an option, this method is not suitable for you, move on to next method.

6) Exit Registry Editor. Reboot your computer.

5: Install MTP Porting Kit
1) Download MTP Porting Kit from Microsoft official website here. Then double click it to install the setup file.

2) After the installation, restart your computer.

3) Reconnect your mobile phone to your computer by using the USB cable again to see if the problem persists.

If you have already had the MTP Porting Kit on your computer, you may need to update it to the latest version to make sure that it function well.

MTP stands for Media Transfer Protocol. It is actively used when you want to transfer data between your computer and any android device. If this device doesn’t install as expected, you will not be able to transfer media or other files.

This error usually pops up when you connect your device to your computer using a USB connection. It means that the computer was unable to successfully establish a connection with the device; hence the device driver installation failed.

Before we move on to the troubleshooting, you should make sure that your phone hardware is working fine and there are no faults. Try connecting the device to other computers and check if they connect successfully there. Try connecting the USB to different ports on the computer (try both front and back in your PC). You should also check if the cable you are using is functioning properly. Try using different data transfer tables and check if there is any difference.

You can also try checking the option “USB debugging” on your mobile device and then try plugging it into your computer. If this doesn’t make any effect, you can always revert back the changes.

Solution 1: Using Command Prompt
We can try running one command on your command prompt related to the local group on your computer. Most of the time the error message is just caused by the UAC restricting the computer from installing the required device drivers. We can try changing that through the command prompt and check if this solves the problem.

1. Press Windows + S to launch the Search bar, type “command prompt” in the dialogue box, right-click on the application and select “Run as administrator”.
2. Once at the command prompt, execute the following command:

net localgroup Administrators local service /add

1. Execute the following command and try plugging in your device again for Windows to detect it and install the required drivers. Hopefully, the problem will be solved. You can also try restarting your computer after executing the command if the problem still persists.

Solution 2: Checking Registry Settings
Another reason why this error might be occurring is that your registry settings might be set not to recognize and install an external device. We can try changing the registry settings by deleting one entry and check if this solves the problem at hand.

1. Press Windows + R, type “regedit” in the dialogue box and press Enter.
2. Once in the registry editor, navigate to the following address:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control/Class.

1. Once in the target location, press “Ctrl + F” to launch the search dialogue. Enter the word “Portable Devices” and press “Find Next”.

If you don’t find the folder, head over to the next solution as this one isn’t fit for your computer.

1. Windows will now iterate through all the results and try searching for the keyword. If it finds a match, check if that folder contains the key “UpperFilters”. If you find it, delete the keyword and restart your computer for the changes to take effect.
2. After restarting, plug in your device again and check if the problem gets fixed.

Note: Registry Editor is a powerful tool. Editing the keys which you don’t know about can hamper your computer and even make it unusable. It is advised to back up your registry before implementing any changes to make sure that you can always restore if anything goes wrong.

Solution 3: Installing the MTP Porting Kit
If the problem still persists, it can mean that you don’t have the MTP Porting Kit installed on your computer or it is outdated. We can try installing the latest kit from Microsoft’s official website and check if this brings any difference.

1. Head over to Microsoft’s official website and download the MTP Porting Kit to an accessible location.
2. Open the executable and install the software on your computer. After the installation, restart your computer.
3. Now plug in your device and check if the computer installs the required drivers as expected.

The first and most common problems can be that the USB socket of the computer is no longer working properly as the center piece in the USB port is bent. This is a common problem as inserting and removing USB connectors does bend the middle of the USB port. See if it is still straight.

You can see from this picture what it is that I am talking about. That centre piece of the USB port does bend upwards or sideways as you pull out the USB adapter each time. Very common problem when you are using the front ports of your computer.

Samsung Driver Solution 2:
The next problem tends to be a motherboard problem. Some computers will not run the USB port from the front sockets of the computer. As an example My Dell Computer does not allow me to access my Iphone from the front sockets without loads of problems. Sticking it into the rear USB ports always works without an issue. You might have the same problem.

Samsung Driver Solution 3:
Corrupt software can also present a problem. This will show in the Device Manager of you computer. The easiest way to get there is to:

• Click on the Start menu and type devmgmt.msc then hit Enter

The following screen will come up. If there is an error then it will show that there is a USB problem and the driver will be the issue. If there is no problem you will get a screen as I have at the bottom.

Nothing wrong there however if you had a problem then you would see the following screen.

What you need to do when you see this error is to “Right-Click” on the device and then click “Uninstall”. Ensure that you phone has been disconnected and also remove all other USB devices in the ports.

You now need to reboot the computer. Once back now install the Samsung USB driver or the Samsung Android Driver and let the device install the software on its own. This would normally solve the issue most times.

Samsung Driver Solution 4:
There may be an MTP-USB driver failure. As before get in to the Device Manager and from there see if you have any errors showing such as that listed below where it shows an MTP error.

If you have one of these errors then “Right-Click” on the MTP Device and Click on “Update Software” and then browse to where you had downloaded the driver too. It will then update the MTP driver to the latest one you had downloaded. This would solve the issue.

Samsung Driver Solution 5:
This is common with the Samsung being mainly the Galaxy phone. The OS I am using is in English so if you have a Spanish system then the command will be in Spanish. Click on [start] and at the bottom type in CMD which will bring the OS with the DOS command up. copy and past this in the command line:

net localgroup Administrators local service /add

That will put most MTP and Driver issues to bed right there. Find the equivalent in your language if the operating system is not in English. If this has not worked then try the next solution as one of them is going to fix it.

Samsung Driver Solution 6:
The next solutions that has worked for some was to unmount and remove the SD Card from the phone and then connecting the phone without the card. Once connected and recognised unplug the phone and turn it off. Insert the SD Card again and turn on the phone. Normally this will bring the phone back to normal for some users.

• Click Start, right-click on Computer and select Properties.
• Go to Device Manager.
• Click on View and click on Show Hidden devices.
• Navigate to Universal Bus Controllers“
• Right-click on it and choose “Uninstall” for all the USB devices listed there.
• After the un-installation, click “Action – Scan for hardware changes”.
• Install the device again.
• Reboot the computer and see how it works.

Those are the 7 solutions for the USB and MTP problems with the Samsung phones. If they do not work then the solutions are more difficult to find. Check your cables and ensure that work and also dont connect to the USB hub and they can also create problems. Most people have fixed the phone with one of these solutions.
