"She Was"

"She Was"

She started her new life ten dollars in debt
That's all it took to get started back then
A trip to the courthouse across the state line
No one could stop her, she'd made up her mind
He was eighteen, she wasn't
But she said she was and never thought twice
Came back home as my daddy's wife
She just shook her head when her momma said
"Are you sure he's the one?" She was
He took a job and farmed on the side
He made the ends meet, but she kept 'em tied
Changes were coming to their little world
She said "What would you like, a boy or a girl?"
He said "Are you?"
She said she was and never thought twice
'Bout takin the next step in building their lives
Soon there were three and she tried to be
Everything to us And she was
Those precious moments turned into years
In what seemed like the blink of an eye
I held her hand as I leaned down to ask her
"Momma, Are you ready to say goodbye?"
She said she was but she thought twice
Holdin' my hand as she let go of life
Daddy always said a woman like her
Would be hard to give up
And she was
She was
If there ever was a picture of love,
She was

"Since You Ain't Home"

"Since You Ain't Home"

Since you left I can't stay sober
And I've let the grass grow over
Those pretty flowers that you planted when we moved in
And the paint has started peeling
Down the hall, along the ceiling
Above the busted frame your picture's hangin in.
And the carpet's wearin through, where I dragged around these blues
And the curtain's torn in two, from me lookin out for you
Once we held it all together, but I can't do it on my own
This old house has gone to pieces since you ain't home.
Our TV won't get no picture
There's no lightbulb in the fixture
In our bedroom where you used to love on me
All the memories that we once shared
They're all locked forever in there
'Cause I locked the door and I can't find the key.
And the carpet's wearin through, where I dragged around these blues
And the curtain's torn in two, from me lookin out for you
Once we held it all together, but I can't do it on my own
This old house has gone to pieces since you ain't home.

"So You Can't Hurt Me Anymore"

"So You Can't Hurt Me Anymore"

It's getting hard to look me in the eyes
The sad truth is mirrors never lie
After all the pain you put me through
I always kept on running back to you

There was a time we were the best of friends
You had my back through the thick and thin
But now I realize the bitter truth
All I've got is everything to lose

It's time to go
Our separate ways
Been going through hell
From all the hell we raise
There comes a day
To turn the page
So tonight I'm pouring you out on the floor
So you can't hurt me anymore

Since you left we've been hand and hand
Nowadays I don't recognize the man
You know I thought she got the best of me
But you're the one who put me on my knees

It's time to go
Our separate ways
Been going through hell
From all the hell we raise
There comes a day
To turn the page
So tonight I'm pouring you out on the floor
So you can't hurt me anymore

It's time to go
Our separate ways
Been going through hell
From all the hell we raise
There comes a day
To turn the page
So tonight I'm pouring you out on the floor
So you can't hurt me anymore

You can't hurt me ... anymore

"Somebody Save The Honky Tonks"

"Somebody Save The Honky Tonks"

I drove down to The Trap but the joint was closed
Lately they've been droppin' like Dominos
All of my favorite waterin' holes are dryin' up
Tell me is it too much for a man to ask
To hear Haggard and Jones sing CC Waterback
With the lights so low
And cold drafts will cost you one buck
Enough's enough.

Somebody save the honky tonks
The hard wood floor and the quarter jukebox
Where's the workin' man gonna go to get tore up
When the last one's tore down
Somebody save the neon lights
And the cinderblock shacks crossed the county line
Everyday another piece of history's lost
Somebody save the honky tonks.

Well, it's enough to bring a tear to a blood shot eye
Not knowin' where to go on a Friday night
To get down and get loud
And unwind from a hard day
Listen, we the people got a make a stand
Maybe write a letter to our congressman
Show some support for the drinkin' man
We can't wait, until it's too late.

Somebody save the honky tonks
The hard wood floor and the quarter jukebox
Where's the workin' man gonna go to get tore up
When the last one's tore down
Somebody Save the neon lights
And the cinderblock shacks crossed the county line
Everyday another piece of history's lost
Somebody save the honky tonks.

Why don't they take that ol' wreckin' ball
To the uppity bars, down at the mall
All I'm askin, all I want
Somebody save the honky tonks.

"Somewhere Out There Tonight"

"Somewhere Out There Tonight"

Well, I'm slippin' on my old party clothes
Wondering if they're still in style
Ain't had 'em on since you've been gone
And that's been a long long while.

And I wonder if these old dancing shoes
Will they still feel right?
Guess I'll never know unless I go
Somewhere out there tonight.

Been livin' alone
Since you've been gone
Hoping you might return
And I've yet to let
A stranger in my door
But I'm feeling more willing
Than ever before.

Oh, I wonder if I'll feel out of place
Should new arms hold me tight
Guess I'll never know unless I go
Somewhere out there tonight.

Yeah, I wonder if I'll feel out of place
Should new arms hold me tight
Guess I'll never know unless I go
Somewhere out there tonight...

"Strangers"

"Strangers"

Even though I've only known her for a couple of beers
In just one more slow dance we'll be leavin' here
Holding each other like we'll never let go
Pretending it's love even though we both know.
We'll be strangers come mornin', again
And realize we're not even friends
'Cause daylight will take us from a world of pretend
And we'll be strangers come mornin', again.
Her soft brown eyes bring comfort to me
And in my arms she'll find the strength that she needs
I know it's not right but it don't feel that wrong
And we'll soon face what we've known all night long.
We'll be strangers come mornin', again
And realize we're not even friends
'Cause daylight will take us from a world of pretend
And we'll be strangers come mornin', again.
And we'll be strangers come mornin', again...

"Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down"

"Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down"

Well, I woke up Sunday morning
With no way to hold my head that didn't hurt
And the beer I had for breakfast wouldn't bad
So I had one more for dessert

Then I fumbled through my closet for my clothes
And found my cleanest dirty shirt
And I shaved my face and combed my hair
Stumbled down the stairs to meet the day

Well, I'd smoked my brain the night before
On cigarettes and songs I'd been picking
But I lit my first and watched a small boy
Cussin' at a can that he was kicking

And I crossed the empty street
Caught the Sunday smell of someone frying chicken
And Lord, it took me back to something that I'd lost
Somewhere, somehow along the way

On a Sunday morning sidewalk
I'm wishing Lord, that I was stoned
'Cause there's something in a Sunday
That makes a body feel alone

And there's nothing short of dying
That's half as lonesome as the sound
Of a sleeping city sidewalk
A Sunday mornin' comin' down

In the park I saw a daddy
With a laughing little girl, he was swinging
And I stopped beside a Sunday school
And listened to the songs that they were singing

Then I headed back for home
And somewhere far away a bell was ringing
And it echoed through the canyons
Like the disappearing dreams of yesterday

On a Sunday morning sidewalk
Lord, I'm wishing I was stoned
'Cause there's something in a Sunday
That makes a body feel alone

And there's nothing short of dying
That's half as lonesome as the sound
Of the sleeping city sidewalk
And Sunday mornin' comin' down

"Talking To Hank"

"Talking To Hank"

While I was hunting wild turkey and sippin' on jim beam
I walked up on something like I've never seen
So deep in the woods where I thought I was alone
Stood a structure where something or someone called home
I saw a shotgun and guitar and six- pack of beer
A sign on the front door said guess who lives here
An old red bone hound that looked older than time
And an old man who that he was just twenty-nine

I swear he looked just like ole hank
I wouldn't bet a wooden nickel that he ain't
I got goose bumps and dizzy and felt kinda faint
I think I've been talkin' to Hank

He said I've played that old guitar in a drifting country band
Played coast to coast and a dew foreign lands
Some crowds were big and some crowds were small
Somehow I hope I let'm know I loved them all
I said you're mighty skinny, he said would you believe
It only took one woman to do this to me
But you gotta bet your hat son and get out of the way
When they start hating love and loving to hate

I swear he looked just like ole hank
I wouldn't bet a wooden nickel that he ain't
I got goose bumps and dizzy and felt kinda faint
I think I've been talkin' to Hank

"Texas Is Bigger Than It Used To Be"

"Texas Is Bigger Than It Used To Be"

Lucky me I grew up beneath that ole lone star
I was raised on fiddle and the steel guitar
Well it used to be if you wanted to swing to a good ole country song
You had to sing your way to Ft. Worth, Houston, Dallas, San Antone
But oh how it's grown
Texas is bigger than it used to be
Coast to coast it's alive in most
Every town and city
I should know I'm on the road
And lovin' what I see
Texas is bigger than it used to be
It's one, two, three step dancin' in the line
Stretchin' that denim having a good time
My daddy told me years ago - he said son there'll come a day
When it'll spread to Minnesota, New York City to LA
It's happening just that way

"Thank God For Believers"

"Thank God For Believers"

Last night I came home again
Three sheets to the wind
And broke the promise I swore I'd never break
And it came As no surprise
To see the hurt in her eyes
Or the Bible on the table where she prayed
This time I thought for sure she was good as gone
But she just wiped the tears away and put some coffee on

I don't know why she even hangs around
After all the hell I've put her through
And the times I've let her down
She has more faith in me than I have ever found
Heaven knows how much I need her
Thank God for believers

She says "Boy I still love you"
Oh she's Stronger than the ninety proof
I sent coursing through my veins
She says "don't give up the fight
Before long you'll get it right"
I pray to God someday I'll feel the same
Sunday morning beside her in the pew
Through blood shot eyes I try to see her point of view

I don't know why she even hangs around
After all the hell I've put her through
And the times I've let her down
She has more faith in me than I have ever found
Heaven knows how much I need her
Thank God for believers
