"Wait For The Tide To Come In"

"Wait For The Tide To Come In"

There's a time I remember
When I tired to be free
I fought like a lion
But I couldn't see
That I was a loser
Before I fired the very first shot
And a back row seat in life
Was all I got

It was all right protesting
I could see it wearing thin
So I walk along the back roads
Waiting for the tide to come in

So the baliff makes you
A traveling man
You swap your house
For a Bedford Van
The countryside I closed
The law wont let you move
They'll push you through the country
What are they tryin' to prove

When you've no harm
Committed no big sin
Just get out along the back roads
And wait for the tide to come in

Hold on
Do you believe the politicians?
Hold on
Do you really think they'll listen
Hold on
Fighting to see it through

Hold back
Before you make a big decision
Hold back
They'll strain to see your vision
Hold back
Don't believe what you read in the news

As you grow older
You gotta realize
You've gotta bend a little
You've got to compromise
And get out on the back roads
Stay off the highway line
Ooh stay while no lies
You will see it come in time

They can't keep you down forever
Their wedge is wearing thin
So get out on the back roads
And wait for the tide to come in

There was a time I remember
When I tried to be free
I fought like a lion
But I couldn't see
That I was a loser
Before I fired the very first shot
And a back row seat in life
Was all I got

It was all right protecting
I could see it wearing thin
So I walk along the back roads
And wait for the tide to come in

Yeah I walk along the backroads
And wait for the tide to come in

"Wake Up John (Hanging Song)"

"Wake Up John (Hanging Song)"

Wake up John, it's time to go
Come along John, don't be slow
Wake up John, it's time to go
A priest joins the procession just to help me kneel
With a warder at my elbow and another at my heel
Marching in the morning down a path I've lately seen
I was sleeping in this garden, am I still within my dream?
The echo of my heartbeat is the beating of a drum
And all the earth is singing with life's sweet hum
We filed in solemn silence, shuffled through a door
The place where life is taken for the letter of the law
Shake the holy water, summon up the guard
Dying's very easy, waiting's very hard
A rope was hanging from the roof, a sight which puzzles me
I thought a gibbet and a guard would make a gallows tree
But now all is revealed, standing there is just a man
My feet are on the trapdoor with a rope around my hand
And now the executioner is shaking hands with me
"My duty I must carry out, you poor fellow," says he
A strap is tied around my feet and a bag upon my head
And then the noose which separates the living from the dead
Shake the holy water, summon up the guard
Dying's very easy, waiting's very hard
There he whispers to me "Have you anything to say?"
My mouth is dry, my throat is tight, I answer "Drop away"
Silence now surrounds me, my heart is beating on
The trapdoor hardly moves at all, my life is still my own
They stand me in a corner with my hands and feet still bound
While a carpenter is called for and an explanation found
"The rain has warped the timbers," I hear the hangman say
"It's funny but it worked well, I tried it yesterday"
"All is ended now," they say, "your ordeal's nearly over
Your life's as good as ended," but I hear their voices waver
Once more the boat is shaken and again I hang in limbo
With the guardians on the trapdoor and my body stands on tip-toe
Shake the holy water, summon up the guard
Dying's very easy, waiting's very hard
They stand me in a corner with my hands and feet still tied
A warder holds onto the noose, the trapdoor opens wide
Is it magic or coincidence that keeps me on the brink?
It seems to work without me, "Will it kill me now?" I think
"Please, I'm tired of living and I really want to die"
I was taken to the scaffold and I heard the hangman cry
"Lee, I'm truly sorry, forgive these hands of mine"
He drew the bolt and I felt the jolt the third and final time
My life was spared that morning 'cause it wasn't theirs to take
Three's the most the law requires, a man could feel the stake
Shake the holy water, summon up the guard
Dying's very easy, waiting's very hard

"Walk Awhile"

"Walk Awhile"

Walk awhile, walk awhile, walk awhile with me
The more we walk together love, the better we'll agree
We'll agree

One hand in your mouth and a finger in your eye
Undertakers bow their heads as you go walking by

Walk awhile, walk awhile, walk awhile with me
The more we walk together love, the better we'll agree
We'll agree

Here comes another Sunday, ringing on the bell
And here comes your own dear child with another tale to tell

Walk awhile, walk awhile, walk awhile with me
The more we walk together love, the better we'll agree
We'll agree

Bring along the brewer's head, bring the cuckoo tree
Bring your lady mother along to keep us company

Walk awhile, walk awhile, walk awhile with me
The more we walk together love, the better we'll agree
We'll agree

Two miles down the road, Henry Tomkins' wife
Three miles down the road, he's running for his life

Walk awhile, walk awhile, walk awhile with me
The more we walk together love, the better we'll agree
We'll agree

O walk awhile, walk awhile, walk awhile with me
The more we walk together love, the better we'll agree
We'll agree

"Wandering Man"

"Wandering Man"

See how a wandering man crosses the open plain
Sure foot, inclusive he divines, you know it's not in vain
That he travels
Footprints left in the earth, show how far he's come
A long way from a baby he was born, into this great unknown
That he travels
Deep down in the diamond mines, he could fall and cut his skin
Fooled by a trick of the light, the way that he came in
There's a land beneath the moon, after his damp and cold
A place where everything's been said, but nothing has been told
Back the shadows
He could lift his head and turn to the sun
To bury that borderline
Freedom is only as good as you feel
So grasp and hold this moment in time
Lives on an ancient ground for his company
Casting out the shadows of doubt, wherever he may be
Soldier of the peaceful way, fighting from dusk 'til dawn
Everything's been ripped apart, but nothing has been torn
Except the shadows
He could lift his head and turn to the sun
To bury that borderline
Freedom is only as good as you feel
So grasp and hold this moment in time
Could I be a wandering man, making my way to you
You're on my mind all of the time, in everything I do
All great ventures ever made, needed a place to start
So every step I'm planning today, might take me to your heart
That it travels
So I lift my head and turn to the sun
And bury that borderline
Freedom is only as good as you feel
So grasp and hold this moment in time
Freedom is only as good as you feel
So grasp and hold this moment in time

"Wat Tyler"

"Wat Tyler"

And on the field at Blackheath
Us commons covered the earth
More men than ever I did see
Poor honest men from birth

The men were up from Kent, and out of Essex too
Though naught but the Thames divides us and unites us onwards
Through all the villages of England and on to London town
Where we poor men would meet our king and lay our grievance down
Wat Tyler led us men from Kent, rough hands were shaken there
King Richard and the commons our bold resolve and prayer

We knew our king would hear us, our loyalty was clear
T'was the bloody lawyers' poll tax that had brought us labourers here
And yet he wouldn't see us, so to London we did roar
And the poor there and the Essex men burst down the prison door
What happened at the Tower was justice, rough in part
The murders of the Flemish boys sat uneasy in my heart
"And now the king must see us" said Tyler to his men
And the very next day young Richard came and met us at Mile End

And on the field at Blackheath
Us commons covered the earth
More men than ever I did see
Poor honest men from birth

Kent and Essex, Bedford, Sussex received King Richard's word
No harm nor blame would come to them if home they would return
And Lincoln, Cambridge, Stafford too received our young king's favour
And thirty thousand left us there, believing it was over
But Tyler, he was not convinced and told us to remain
"I want to hear his words again, for nothing much has changed"
So Tyler, he approached the king and took Richard by the arm
And his rough but friendly gesture caused Richard's knights alarm

"Ah my lord" said Tyler, "companions we shall be"
"I shall trust in you my lord, if you will trust in me"
And so he called for water, and then he called for ale
And his manner shocked young Richard's knights and I watched the Lord Mayor pale
"I know this man" a voice accused, "Wat Tyler is a thief"
The Lord Mayor feared he'd harm the king, that was his true belief
And there at Smithfield drew his sword, and cut our captain down
And the heart went out of all of us with his blood upon the ground

And on the field at Blackheath
Us commons covered the earth
More men than ever I did see
Poor honest men from birth

Young Richard, he was merciful and he pardoned one and all
But home to Kent like beaten dogs, still serfs we had to crawl
But how precious was our liberty and the hope that filled us all
That left poor Tyler's severed head upon a bloody pole

"Weightless / The Gravity Reel"

"Weightless / The Gravity Reel"

High above the surface
Buried in the ground
Swallowed by the silence
Fury and the sound
Free falling on the direction
But the world keeps spinning round
And I am weightless
I am weightless
Suspended [?] tired to the floor
Terrifying absence and an absence to be born
And I am losing all direction
And the world spins even more
And I am weightless
And I am weightless
Against the massive time
And I am breathless
In the wreckage of her life
I am striving
I am striving to rebuild
I will not bow down
Relatively moving and relatively still
Opposite emotion, gravity free will
A small change in my direction
And the world is spinning still
And I am weightless
I am weightless
Against the massive time
And I am breathless
In the wreckage of her life
I am striving
I am striving to rebuild

"What Is True?"

"What Is True?"

Silver tongues are speaking long and hard into the night
I must be myself and I'll do all right
Oh, please my darling, do not make me sad
Late at night nobody really wants to feel that bad
The rain it beats impatiently upon the window pane
I must close my ears or I'll go insane
Can't you be a gentle breeze or silent as a snowfall
Won't you try and listen for the voice behind the wall
It cries to you
Even though it only ever whispers part of what it knows
And it's never ventured through the locks
Where the brazen river flows
It's the fingerprint which is never made
It's the perfume of a rose
And it is there if you are searching
But the moment must be right
As the night is black, as the day is white
Please my friend, help to make me glad
Help me find the one and only thing I've never had
What is true

"When It Comes, He Cannot Sleep..."
(When it comes, he cannot sleep, but when he does, a strange, prophetic dream comes to him, and helps him to bear the strain of his next day's ordeal as scaffold and its crew try in vain three times to take his life.)

"When It Comes, He Cannot Sleep..."
(When it comes, he cannot sleep, but when he does, a strange, prophetic dream comes to him, and helps him to bear the strain of his next day's ordeal as scaffold and its crew try in vain three times to take his life.)

The time is near for things to pass, the time for me to leave
But as I lie here all alone, I really can't believe
The twenty years I've spent on earth could end in so much grief
That the many friendly faces should now stare hatefully

A letter home to mother and a letter home to dad
Another for my sweetheart, for whom I feel so sad
A lock of hair to cling to is all that will remain
And the grave inside this prison yard, a stone that bears no name

My trials and tribulations are nearly now all gone
A murderer I never was and my spirit will live on
Jesus, help me in this troubled time, this hour of trouble deep
Help me find my peace of mind, help me Lord, to sleep
...

Sleep has surprised Mr Lee
We'll creep in behind his eyes and, with his eyes, we will see
Wherever he goes to, we'll be close behind
We'll follow his dreams and we'll stroll in his mind
Dream, dream

John's in the garden all green
With uniforms round him, the hound and the fox can be seen
A willow tree leaving its branches to ground
Is breathing in time to a bell's hollow sound
Dream, dream
Dream, dream

Nature, their numbers have swelled
The sun in the east is the lord of the feast to be held
The doomed and the dutiful tread on the dew
With frost on their faces and shine on their shoes
Dream, dream

Looking to earth and to sky
John stares at John walking slowly along with a sigh
The hand of a stranger takes hold of his arm
And a voice in his ear says "They'll do you no harm"
Dream, dream
Dream, dream
Dream, dream
...

Wake up John, it's time to go
Come along John, don't be slow
Wake up John, it's time to go

"White Dress"

"White Dress"

Feel how the wind blows, December despair
Bring me a ribbon to tie up my hair
I'll be your bride, go where you go
All of my life, you'll be my beau

Kiss me and I might
Put on the white dress
If you'll take me dancing tonight

The night's in your face, sky's in your eyes
The day's in my arms when you're by my side
Whenever you're weary I'll sing you a song
Whenever you're lonely I'll show you you're wrong

Kiss me and I might
Put on the white dress
If you'll take me dancing tonight

Come from the window, let's climb the stairs
All of my sorrows are none of your cares
While life is in us, let's love all we can
I'll be your woman if you'll be my man

Kiss me and I might
Put on the white dress
If you'll take me dancing tonight

"Who Knows Where The Time Goes?"

"Who Knows Where The Time Goes?"

Across the evening sky, all the birds are leaving
But how can they know it's time for them to go?
Before the winter fire, I will still be dreaming
I have no thought of time
For who knows where the time goes?
Who knows where the time goes?
Sad, deserted shore, your fickle friends are leaving
Ah, but then you know it's time for them to go
But I will still be here, I have no thought of leaving
I do not count the time
For who knows where the time goes?
Who knows where the time goes?
And I am not alone while my love is near me
I know it will be so until it's time to go
So come the storms of winter and then the birds in spring again
I have no fear of time
For who knows how my love grows?
And who knows where the time goes?
