"16 Fishermen Raving"

"16 Fishermen Raving"

16 fishermen raving out on the town on E
16 peacocks leave their nest and go flying into mystery
They try to cut the spanish look but they look so untidy
Don't eat too much you'll never get enough when you're flying into mystery
Flyin' into mystery when you should be out seafarin'
Run out the jib rig the boom step back reality

When their ship is on the ocean their nights are so empty
They're weary of the smelly fish and the wash of the salty sea
16 jolly ravers each one carrying his own caul
They believe it will keep death away when they face the angry squall
Why face the angry squall when you could go go-go dancin'
Run out the jib rig the boom step back reality

Yad adad ada yadd a dadd a da yat ti a rat ti a rat ti a ra da
Yadd a dad a da yad adad ada yatt tye a rat tie a rat

To the 16 fishermen raving those girls look so fancy
You could ate your fry off the back of her neck if you want some more say please
When fishermen are feeling good they feel it musically
They go down singing shanties to the dancefloor all at sea
To the dancefloor all at sea 16 fishermen raving
Run out the jib rig the boom step back reality
Flyin' in to mystery when you should be out seafarin'
Run out the jib rig the boom step back reality

Yad adad ada yadd a dadd a da yat ti a rat ti a rat ti a ra da
Yadd a dad a da yad adad ada yatt tye a rat tie a rat...

"A Letter To Syracuse"

"A Letter To Syracuse"

I wrote me a letter to Syracuse, it was a letter full of lies
I told them that we were doing fine, very much to their surprise
For how were they to know that here the ground was soaked in red
Or that we could fill the valley with our dead

I started out and told them that by Christmas we'd begin
To pack our bags and head on home to bring the new year in
While all around me boys who help me sow last season's crop
By charging at the cannons till they drop

I told my mother not to write 'cause we're always moving on
I told my brother not to join 'cause he'd only fight me gun
But if we keep on much further retreating all the way
Oh we'd all be going home just any day

I wrote me a letter to Syracuse, it was a letter full of lies
I told them that we were doing fine, very much to their surprise
For how were they to know that here the ground was soaked in red
Or that we could fill the valley with our dead

"A Pair Of Brown Eyes"

"A Pair Of Brown Eyes"

One summer evening drunk as hell
I sat there nearly lifeless
An old man in the corner sang
Where the water lilies grow
On the jukebox Johnny sang
About a thing called love
And it's "How are you kid? What's your name?
And what do you know?"
In blood and death 'neath a screaming sky
I lay down on the ground
The arms and legs of other men
Were scattered all around
Some prayed and cursed, then cursed and prayed
And then they prayed some more
And the only thing that I could see
Was a pair of brown eyes they were looking at me
When we got back, labeled parts one to three
There was no fairer brown eyes waiting for me
And a rovin' a rovin' a rovin' I'll go
A rovin' a rovin' a rovin' I'll go
And a rovin' a rovin' a rovin' I'll go
For a pair of brown eyes
For a pair of brown eyes
I looked at him he looked at me
All I could do was hate him
While Ray and Philomena sang
Of my elusive dream
I saw the streams and the rolling hills
Where his brown eyes were waiting
And I thought about a pair of brown eyes
That waited once for me
That waited once for me
So drunk as hell I left the place
Sometimes walking, sometimes crawling
A hungry sound came through the breeze
So I gave the walls a talking
And I heard the sounds of long ago
From the old canal
And the birds were whistling in the trees
Where the wind was gently laughing
And a rovin' a rovin' a rovin' I'll go
A rovin' a rovin' a rovin' I'll go
And a rovin' a rovin' a rovin' I'll go
For a pair of brown eyes
For a pair of brown eyes

"A Stitch In Time"

"A Stitch In Time"

There was a woman and she lived on her own
Slaved on her own and she skivvied on her own
She'd two little boys and two little girls
She lived all alone with her husband

He was a hunk of a man
A chunk of a man and a punk of a man
A hunk of a drunken skunk of a man
Such a boozy, bruising, bully of a husband

When he came home drunk at night
He'd thrashed her black and thrashed her white
Thrashed her to within an inch of her life
And snored all night like a pig, her drunken husband

One night she gathered her tears all round her shame
Covered up the bruise and cried with the pain
You'll not do that ever again
I'll not live anymore with a drunken husband

And that night as he lay drunk in bed
The strangest thought came to her head
She took up the needle and the thread
And went straight into her sleeping husband

She started to stitch with a girlish thrill
A woman's eye and a seamstress' skill
She bibbed and tucked with an iron will
As she stitched all round her sleeping husband

The top sheet, the bottom sheet, too
The blanket stitched to the mattress through
She bibbed and tucked the whole night through
Waiting for the dawn and her husband

He awoke with a pain in his head
He found that he could not move in bed
Sweet God in Heaven, have I lost me legs
She just sat and smiled at her husband

In her hand she held the frying pan
With a flutter in her heart she flew at him
He could not move he cried, "God damn
Don't you swear at me ya drunken husband"

She beat him black, and she beat him blue
With the frying pan and the colander too
With the rolling pin a stroke or two
Such a battered and repenting husband

"If you ever come home drunk again
I'll stitch you up and I'll sew you in
Then I'll pack my bag and I'll be gone
I'll not live anymore with a drunken husband"

Isn't it true what a wife can do
With a needle, thread and a stitch or two?
He's sobered up and his boozin's through
She don't live anymore with a drunken husband

"Aisling"

"Aisling"

See the bright new moon is rising
Above the land of black and green
Hear the rebels voices calling
I will not die till you bury me

The aunt upstairs in the bed she is calling
Why has he forsaken me
Faded pictures in the hallway
Which one of them brown ghosts is he

Bless the wind that shakes the barley
Curse the spade and curse the plough
I've counted years and weeks and days
And I wish to God I was with you now

Fare thee well me black-haired diamond
Fare thee well me own Aisling
At night fond dreams of you still haunt me
Far across the grey north sea

And the wind it blows from the North and South
To the East And to the West
I will be like the wind my love
For I will know no rest till I return to thee

1, 2, 3 telegraph poles
Standing on the cold black road
The night is fading into morning
Give us a drop of your sweet poit'n

The rain was lashing - the sun was rising
The wind was howling through the trees
The madness from the mountains crawling
When I saw you first my own Aisling

Bless the wind that shakes the barley
Curse the spade and curse the plough
I've counted years and weeks and days
And I wish to God I was with you now

Fare thee well my black haired diamond
Fare thee well my own Aisling
At night fond dreams of you still haunt me
Far across the grey north sea

"All For The Roses"

"All For The Roses"

He's twenty-five, he's sick and tired
It's time to try the other side
The B&I to paradise
To sergeants and their men

He's never been to Dun Na Ri
Combed the beaches after three
Chips and beer and greenery
Brothers one and all

He signed and took the soldiers crest
A decent man in battle dress
When bugles blow you do your best
For sergeants and their men

All for the roses, over the sea

He's way ahead, he's second to none
With his fabrique nationali gun
Marching bands with Saxon blood
Sergeants and their men

They landed with the sinking sun
An invasion by the media run
They covered up and they kissed with tongues
Sergeants and their men

But the phantom gunner danced the end
And battered human bodies bled
They butchered us, we butchered them
Sergeants and their men

All for the roses, over the sea
All for the roses, Finglas boys to be

Now a flower of sleep grows on his grave
Forgotten soon the cowards and the brave
But the coldest hate still lives today
For sergeants and their men

All for the roses, over the sea
All for the roses, Finglas boys to be

"All I Remember"

"All I Remember"

I was lured by the rocking horse
Sweets and the bualadh bos
Fifty wild boys to a room
Sing lámh, lámh eile, the dish ran away with the spoon
Black shoes and stockings for those who say don't
Blue is the colour outside
God made the world
The snake tempted Eve and she died
Wild Christian brothers sharpening their leathers
Learn it by heart, that's the rule
All I remember is dreading September and school
And they made me for better or worse
The fool that I am or the wise man I'll be
And they gave me their blessings or curse
It wasn't their fault I was me...
Not the one that you see
The priest in confession condemns my obsession
With thoughts that I do not invite
I mumble and stutter
He slams down the shutter
Goodnight (good night to you too, Father)
Stainless as steel
Lord, you know how I feel
Someone shoot me while my soul is clear
I don't think I'll last
But my vow to abstain was sincere
Arch-confraternity men to the fight
Raise up your banners on high
Searching for grace
Securing my place
When I die
Oh God, he kept a very close eye on me
Hung round my bed in the darkness, he spied on me
Caught me in the long grass so often, he died on me...
Ballrooms of romance in Salthill or Mallow
I stood like John Wayne by the wall
Lined up like cattle, we waited to do battle and fall
You can't wine and dine her in an old Morris Minor
So ask her before it's too late
I danced on girls' toes, accepted rejection as my fate
Drink was my saviour, it made me much braver
But I couldn't hold it too well
I slipped on the coach and ruined my approach as I fell

"America, I Love You"

"America, I Love You"

America your head is so big
America your belly is so big
I love you but I wish you'd stay where you live

In America the land of the free they say
Land of opportunity in a just and truthful way
Where the president is never black, female or gay
And until that day you've nothing to say to help me believe

In America you gave us the hamburger
America you know where you can shove your hamburger
Don't you wonder why in Estonia they say
Hey you, yes you, you pig, you fat pig

Steely blue eyes with no love in them scan the world
And a humorless smile with no warmth within greets the world
While I who have nothing to offer you no no no no
But this heart deep and true you say you don't need

See with your eyes, feel with your hands, please
Hear with your ears, know in your soul, please
For haven't you me with you now and I love you
America, I love you...

"Among The Wicklow Hills"

"Among The Wicklow Hills"

The autumn evenings filled with copper shades
I see the birds' neck in the frame
A figure walks into the sunset
Someone goes past suspended from the sky
Takes more imagination
When everything's remote control
For me it's just a case of
What's on the far side of the road
Tell everybody
I'm going away for ten years
I'm going to wander
Among the Wicklow hills
The travelling children in their Sunday clothes
Lost on the corner of the Street
Fat gypsy lady smacks the windowpane
A farm dog gets out on the motorway
Takes more imagination
When everything's remote control
For me it's just a case of
What's on the far side of the road
Tell everybody
I'm going away for ten years
I'm going to wander
Among the Wicklow hills
