"Back When We Was Kids"

"Back When We Was Kids"

Well I grew up in the shadow of the Rockies in the grand old West yes sir I did
And dammed if we didn't have us a bunch of fun back when we was kids
Yea there was manure on our britches snuff pouchin' out our lip
And hat's so big you can almost tell who's under it
Yea we all had horses it was always a race
It was real important who got there first
We sneak along some of the old man's whisky just to quench our little thirst
Yeah we looked like a bunch of hon yaks but we could ride like Casy Tibbs
And we still had to learn how far we could go before we learned when to quit

Yea we scratched where it itches and clowned around
There wasn't nobody who could kick our hound
Just throwin' knives and shootin' guns generally have in a bunch of fun
Well the mommas all thought we were angels and hell we let 'em go right ahead
But the old man had a hew more savvy in him
And a feller had to be careful around him
Yea wars were fought on contact and the wild seeds were sown
And we always spent our money like we found it in the road
Well one thing lead to another and before we knowned it it was gone
But I'll give you a hundred dollars just to have some more of them goings on
Cause we looked like a bunch...
Yea it's a lot of fun learning how far you can go
It's kinda hard learning when to quit but I'll bet you already know

"Just Riding Through"

"Just Riding Through"

Pack up your old guitar cowboy roll up your old sleepin' bag
It's time you got to movin' cause your life is startin' to drag
You ain't leavin' nothin' but faces the same stars watch you at night
That same old lonesome will own you but you've grown too tired to fight
You're one child's father another man's son one woman's candle of light
Too far into tomorrow for lovin' somebody tonight
You're too many miles from home now gamblin' with nothin' to lose
A side street hobo in rodeo clothes cowboy you're just riding through

Pull on your old blue jeans cowboy put on your old dusty hat
Sunup caught you a sleepin' gamblin' busted you flat
The whiskey it caught you a drinkin' the rain and the wind caught you cold
Lovin' cost you a memory and the Devil he caught your soul
You're one child's father...

"I Got You"

"I Got You"
We'll I've been up and I've been down I've been over and I've been around
I've been in and I've been out I've had some thinks to shout about
But I know I won't strike out if I got you
Well I've been good and I've been bad I've been happy oh I've been sad
Had the world right by the tail got the wind below from my sails
But I know I'll never fail if I got you
As long as I got you to talk beside me
Well I'll never let no problem get me down
Well there ain't no problem
Touch enough to ride me or to throw me to the ground
As long as your around

Well I've been wrong and I've been right I walked in darkness and I've seen the light
I was lost and now I'm found got my feet back on the ground
I know I won't drown I got you
As long as I got you...

Well I've been weak and I've been strong I've felt the blues in a country song
Senn my dreams go up in smoke been at the end of my rope
Now I know I won't choke if I got you
As long as I got you...

"Freedom's Just A State Of Mind"

"Freedom's Just A State Of Mind"
When the freedom you've know has left you a broken man
When everything you've ever owned slipped thru your hands
Well it don't really matter at all and you don't give a damn
Oh the fortunes that shackled the heart and the soul of a man
Some men search for silver some men look for gold
But you have found a treasure their pockets will never hold
Some men look forever and still they never find
They don't know that freedom is just a state of mind

When you've burned all your bridges and you've covered all your tracks
Well it goes with out sayin' there's never no turnin' back
When the highway to nowherehas finally came to an end
Well they might think you're crazy when you tell 'em you'ed do it again
Some men search for silver...

"Cowboy And The Hippie"

"Cowboy And The Hippie"
On a highway thru the desert beneath an over pass
Sat two hikers just watchin' cars go by
Now one was wearin' sandles with straggly matted hair
Rose colored glasses for his eyes

Now the other was a cowboy he'd been down on his luck
Lost his money at the Tuscon rodeo
And he sat beside what remained of his trusty pickup truck
And like the hippie now he's thumbin' down the road

Some folks don't realize that it's a well know fact
Cowboy's and hippies ain't never got along
Was it just coincidence or some weird act of fate
That brought these two together on the road

They sat there without talking while the morning sun rose high
When a hot desert breeze commenced to blow
And the fragrance of the incense and six weeks without a bath
Finally drifted down and reached the cowboy's nose

Well man that really did it he couldn't take no more
And he tied his old bandana around his face
He said you greasy stinking hippie you'd put a skunk to shame
Boy you're a discrace to the human race

Now the hippie just sat there and gave the cowboy a smile
Said man you don't smell so sweet yourself
Well I'm not too sure what that green stuff is on your boots and on your jeans
But whew it's enough to make a buzzard belch

The cowboy said now listen I ain't gonna that that stuff from you
No long haired freaks gonna talk to me that way get up
Well the hippie said, now hold on man, what good's that gonna do
You know fighting never settles nothing anyway

Now we both love our freedom and we'll answer to no man
And you've heard it said to thine own self be true
We're just a couple of free spirts drifting across the land
Doing exactly what we want to do

Said now me I got my things and you you got yours
And I don't see why we can't get along
They say the closest thing to freedom is livin' on the road
In a country where freedom's almost gone

Well the cowboy, he just stood up there and never said a word
But you know this hippie sure made a lot of sense
They shook hands and parted as a truck pulled to the side
And the hippie he went East and I went West

"Misfortunes' Own Son"

"Misfortunes' Own Son"

The Wild horse he wonders up high on the mountain
He grazes on short grass where Bitter winds blow
He's headed to nowhere with no time to spare
Storm clouds are building and lookin' like snow

With tight reins and curb chains can't handle or hold him
He don't fit in fences he's way to high strung
His freedom don't feed him and nobody needs him
He's just an old wild horse, misfortunes own son

The old cowboy looks at his ropes and his riggin'
Their all he has left that's worth caryin' about
Well him and that leather went through hell together
It seems like their both getting close to worn out

Well there ain't too much call now for his kind of cowboy
There aren't enough wild horses out there to run
Besides he too old but that's all he knows
He's just an old cowboy, misfortunes own son

[CHORUS:]
Wild horses and old cowboys two of a kind
Yesterday's heroes the time left behind
Wide open spaces are fast closing in
Misfortunes own sons you wont see them again

The Wild horse is Weary, there's snow on the mountain
No peace in the valley, full of highways and towns
The old man just spent his last day in the saddle
There's no reason to ride now the old days are gone

But you can't hardly blame them for trying to hold onto
Their own way of life now it's over and done

Just lonesome reminders left over survivors
The old cowboy and the wild horse misfortunes own son

[CHORUS]

"Old Tom Horn"

"Old Tom Horn"

Now back in old Wyoming many long years ago
When there was no law and order round to regulate the show
Those old Wyoming ranchers had a problem on their hands
Trying to keep the cow thieves and the rustlers off their land
Now old Tom Horn came a riding up one day
Gonna lend a hand to the cattlemen in his own peculiar way
Well he took his 44-40 out and cleaned it up right well
Then he rode off down Dry Gulch with a sack of rifle shells
Old Tom Horn with a rifle by his side through the hills of Wyoming he would ride
There ain't no tellin' how many cattle thieves he killed
But it was God help the rustler when Tom Horn was in the hill

If you rode the Larame Valley by either day or night
You can be right sure he's watchin' you through his rifle sights
He laid out in the bushes and the rustler come around
Then he'll spill the boy with a single shot and chamber one more round
Now the rustlers tried to stop him but they found there was no way
He could pick them off from a mountain side a half mile away
Well they ran him down the border but they never touched his hide
He just slipped across to his hide out on the Colorado side
Old Tom Horn with a rifle...

Then one day young Willie Nickle was out a ridin' around
A 44-40 shot rang out and laid the poor boy down
Well it was only fourteen years since that little kid was born
And they said it looked like the doing's of that lonesome Tom Horn
So the cattlemen went and strung him up with a length of fresh snipped rope
But his ghost still hangs out in the hills and spooks the Antelope
Now all the rustlers hatred and all the cattlemen's fears
Have keep all Tom Horn alive through all the changing years
Old Tom Horn with a rifle...

"When The Rodeo Comes To Town"

"When The Rodeo Comes To Town"

Most of the time, things are pretty sublime in this little one horse town
Well they close all the stores and they roll up the steets
When the evenning sun goes down
But the fourth of July flags will be flying high
As folks come from miles around
They'll be roarin' all night till the dawns early light
When the big rodeo comes to town

Well there ain't no top names of rodeo fame no Tibbs nor Larry Mahans
Just some local cowboys out to make 'em some noise
But they know everyone in the stands
They're clean and they're wild with tobacco stained smiles
And they dont care if they make a dime
If they win or they lose well they don't give a hoot
They're out just to have a good time

There's cowboys and ladies and old folks and babies
And young girls with stars in their eyes
Flashy bronc riders and whisker'ed old timers tellin' their stores and lies
There's cold beer and Brandy and pink cotton candy
When it's all over they'll all head on down
To the rodeo dance some midnight romance
When the big rodeo comes to town

The bands playing loud to that dance hall crowd
As boots stir the dust on the floor
At the bar they're playin' old Willie and Whalen
As beers disappear by the score
But hangovers I'll bet they'll soon forget
When the next year comes rollin' around
They'll be at it again with all of their friends
When the big rodeo comes to town

"(I Used To Want To Be A) Cowboy"

"(I Used To Want To Be A) Cowboy"

I used to want to be a cowboy
Spent my childhood dreamin' that
Wearing spurs and boots and six guns
And a big ten-gallon hat

Chasin' outlaws, savin' ladies
Bustin' broncs at rodeos
Riding off into the sunset
Like they do in picture shows

I used to want to be a cowboy
I dreamed about it until the day
That a green-eyed Texas lady
Smiled and stole my heart away

Now I'm trackin' down a livin'
And as far as I can see
Right now I'm just as much a cowboy
As I'm ever gonna be

'Cause my round-ups at a truck stop
The trails a super slab
I wear boots up in the saddle
Of my eighteen wheelers cab

Riding hell bent for the bunkhouse
Just across the Georgia Line
Where tonight, I'll see my lady
And that little boy of mine

And he wants to be a cowboy
You know somehow I kind of expected that
Wearing spurs and boots and six guns
And a big ten-gallon hat

And all my cowboy dreams are livin'
In that little buckaroo
Cowboys often end up daddies
You know I'm really glad, they do

And he wants to be a cowboy
Just the way his daddy did
When he's on his broomstick pony
He's Hoppy, Roy and the Sisco Kid

And he wants to be a cowboy
Just the way his daddy did

"The Lights Of Amarillo"

"The Lights Of Amarillo"

The panhandle dust is blowin' hard tonight
I can't even see across the road
I'm thankful for the wind
It's a blessing in desskies
It keeps me from seein'
The lights of Amarillo

Well I can't really blame her
For leavin' me here
I couldn't leave papa all alone
She wanted those kinda things
That I could never give her
She went to find them
In the lights of Amarillo

[CHORUS:]
The lights of Amarillo shines so bright
Across the plains they became her guiding light
I can see them in the distance on a clear panhandle night
She's out there somewhere in the lights of Amarillo

Well each night I'm so warn out
From workin' all day long
Hoein' those endless cotton rows
'Bout the time I'm layin' down
Her dancin' shoes are going on
Going out with some cowboy
In the lights of Amarillo

[CHORUS]

She's out there somewhere in the lights of Amarillo
