"Bottomless Well"

"Bottomless Well"

They say there he sits in his big white wicker rocker
Eatin' candy coated cashews sippin' orange lemonade
While a sweet young thing fans the flies from off his eyebrows
He's dozin' in the green catalpa shade
Lord, they say that Jesse Langtree's got it made.

A little bit south of the Okechobee
There's a story that the swamp folks tell
About a mean old man named Jesse Langtree
And a sweet young maid and a bottomless well.

That water's cold but that don't matter
How deep it is no one can tell
Just drop a stone you'll never hear it splatter
It just falls down, down forever in the bottomless well.

Through fifteen miles of snakes and gators
With the raging fever and the trembling chills
I wandered lost through the Okechobee
And there I seen 'em sittin' there by the bottomless well.

Yeah now there he sits in his big white wicker rocker
Eatin' candy coated cashews sippin' orange lemonade
While a sweet young thing fans the flies from off his eyebrows
He's dozin' in the green catalpa shade
Lord, they say that Jesse Langtree's got it made.

(Oh let's hear it for Jesse now, hey Jesse.)

I asked her for a drink of water
And as Jesse slept me and her we talked a spell
She said that she was his wife and daughter, Lord, Lord
But his heart was cold, cold and dark as the bottomless well.

And as he slept I bent to kiss her
I heard a loud and jealous yell
Felt my head explode in darkness two big hairy arms picked me up
And dragged me to the bottomless well.

I woke up in fear and trembling
I was staring down into the jaws of hell
As he held me high above his shoulders
A gonna throw me down, down, down to the bottomless well.

Now here I sit in Jesse's big white wicker rocker
Eatin' his candy coated cashews sippin' his orange lemonade
While that sweet young thing fans the flies from off my eyebrows
I'm dozin' in the green catalpa shade
Enjoying things that Jesse Langtree made.

Oh, God bless you Jesse.

Now some folks say that sweet thing pushed him
But I was there and I'd swear he fell
But it ain't murder cause he ain't dead cause he's still a fallin'
Goin' down, down forever in the bottomless well.

Goin' down, down, down, down, down, bye Jesse...

"Brian Hennessey"

"Brian Hennessey"

Brian Hennessey sat back and let the gypsy read his palm
When he saw her eyes grow wide and wild and dark
And she whispered through her toothless gums and clutched him by the arm
She said, "Boy, I fear I see the devil's mark."

Brian Hennessey just laughed and pealed the ten-spot from his roll
'Cause he'd never ever known the taste of fear
But he wondered why the summer nights should suddenly turn cold
As the gypsy's words come ringing in his ear.

"You can run, you can hide, Brian Hennessey.", she cried
"But you can't escape the fate that's in your hand.
And say how does it feel to have dealt your final deal?
Go on lay down Brian you're a dying man."

Brian Hennessey walked through the doors of the Dining Dog Saloon
Where he stopped to have his nightly glass of gin
And the one-eyed scar-faced stranger a dealing blackjack in the gloom
Winked his ghastly grey glass eye and dealt him in.

Brian watched in fascination as the stranger's fingers flew
Why he'd never seen such cheatin' done before
And his hand closed round a handle of his snub-nose 32
When the gypsy's warning come to him once more.

"You can run, you can hide, Brian Hennessey.", she cried
"But you can't escape the fate that's in your hand.
And say how does it feel to have dealt your final deal?
Go on lay down Brian you're a dying man."

Brian Hennessey just folded up his cards and walked away
Holding back the rage that burned his soul
And he stopped to have some coffee at the Mockingbird Cafe
But that slender blue eyed waitress was his goal.

And a few words from his silver tongue soon turned her flutty head
She said, "My husband's out of town, you need not fear."
But as he pressed her to the softness of her flutty-feathered bed
On her pillows he saw written bright and clear.

Oh, you can run, you can hide, daring letters clear and wide
Said you can't escape the fate that's in your hand
And say how does it feel to have dealt your final deal
Go on lay down Brian you're a dying man.

Brian Hennessey he stumbled down the stairs into the street
And from that day on he changed his wicked life
And he never drunk or gambled and he never dealt no dough
And he never touched another fellow's wife.

And years later he met the gypsy when his days were almost done
He said, "Ha, ha, I beat your curse don't you know."
But when she saw the frightened, trembling, withered wretch that he'd become
She said, "Brian, you died twenty years ago."

"Because you ran and you hid that's exactly what you did
But you didn't escape the fate that's in your hand.
And say how did it feel to have dealt your final deal?
Go on lay down Brian you're a dying man..."

"Brooklyn Bridge"

"Brooklyn Bridge"

Oh, there I stood in the great big city
Where the buildings're tall and the girls're all pretty
Up stepped a man he said come here son
I got a big deal now if you got the mon'
I bought the Brooklyn Bridge
Two dollars, two cigarettes and an autograph picture of Elvis.

Well, I kept my bridge for a day or so
But then my money was a runnin' low
And I tried to make me a sale
But the man done come and he took me to jail.

Said I's crazy, laughed at
Told me that a society frowned upon them.
Well, then he stood me up in a front of a judge
I stood there a grinnin' but the judge didn't budge.

He said 30 dollars or 30 days
And I looked at him and all I could say
Was all that take 30 dollars, couldn't make that 35 could you
Spend all my money on that bridge.

Well, after 90 days in that man's jail
I still tryin' to make me a sale
Met some cat called Skid Row Pete
So I traded it off for 52nd Street.

Big deal, oh big man of action,
A big transaction.

I bet the folks back home could never realize
That in a great big town this size
Boy like theirs could own the street
Spend his days just to keepin' it neat.

Pickin' up cigarette butts, wine bottles
Terrorizing the pedestrians, hoo them pigeons
I bet old Skid Row Pete ain't got no pigeons
On the Brooklyn Bridge...

"Bye Bye Love"

"Bye Bye Love"

[Bobby & Liz & Norma]

Bye, bye love, bye, bye happiness
Hello loneliness, I think I'm gonna cry
Bye, bye love, bye, bye sweet caress
Hello emptiness, I feel like I could die
Bye, bye, my love, goodbye.

There goes my baby with someone new
He sure feel happy, I sure look blue
He was my baby till she walked in
Goodbye to romance that might have been.

Bye, bye love, bye, bye happiness
Hello loneliness, I think I'm gonna cry
Bye, bye love, bye, bye sweet caress
Hello emptiness, I feel like I could die
Bye, bye, my love, goodbye.

I'm through with romance, I'm through with love
I'm through with counting the stars above
I guess the reason why I'm so free
Is both my babies walked out on me.

Bye, bye love, bye, bye happiness
Hello loneliness, I think I'm gonna cry
Bye, bye love, bye, bye sweet caress
Hello emptiness, I feel like I could die
Bye, bye, my love, goodbye.

Bye, bye, my love, goodbye.
Bye, bye, my love, goodbye.
Bye, bye, my love, goodbye...

"California Dreams"

"California Dreams"

Let me carry that old suitcase hon
And here's my hat to shade your pretty head from the sun
Let's keep moving down the road that has no end it seems
For a long time we've been dreaming California dreams.

Where the sands're gold and blue the sea
Money grows from every tree
It's always there for you and me California dreams.

This old road gets longer every mile
And honey I know this is no place for a woman with child
But soon we'll have someone to share our plans and our schemes
And our baby will be a part of California dreams.

I should have known this would be too much for you
But I thank you honey for lovin' me enough to come along
'Cause your love is so true
And it just won't be the same when I'll reach California's shining sea
'Cause without you there beside me there's just no California dreams.

Where the sands're gold and blue the sea
Money grows from every tree
It's always there for you and me California dreams.

California dreams, California dreams...

"Can't Seem To Get Nowhere"

Here I am a livin' fast, smokin' Lucky's and talkin' trash
Hangin' out on a barroom stool actin' like a fool
Out of work and out of luck stay out late and I drink too much
You see my face all over town I ought to settle down.

Yes, I guess I must confess
Look at me, my life's a mess
Just like a rockin' chair
I can't seem to get nowhere.

All my friends are married now guess I missed the boat somehow
They all moved away last year but I'm still here
Talkin' big and wastin' time I tell the girls I'm twenty-nine
But lately I think it shows I'm gettin' old.

Yes, I guess I must confess
Look at me, my life's a mess
Just like a rockin' chair
I can't seem to get nowhere.

"Candy Coated Kisses"

"Candy Coated Kisses"

You speak and the words flow like honey
Your kiss holds a promise so sweet
But all of these things that you tell me
You tell to each new love you meet.

Candy coated kisses
Sugar coated lies
Oh, how I want to believe them
But only a fool would try.

You smile and my whole world turns sunny
You know just the right things to say
Your words paint such beautiful pictures
Pictures that soon fade away.

How many hearts have you broken
How many lips have you kissed
I don't wanna know so don't tell me
Just add my name to your list.

Candy coated kisses
Sugar coated lies
Oh, how I want to believe them
But only a fool would try.

Only a fool would try, only a fool would try.
(Candy coated kisses...)

"Changin' My Mind"

"Changin' My Mind"

I keep changin' my mind, just can't make up my mind.

I've been workin' hard and dreamin' 'bout all the things we're gonna do
And how satisfyin' it would be to feel the world round me and you
Then I'm changin' my mind, I keep changin' my mind.

Then I'm very sure I'm not the kind to sink my roots into the ground
And how unhappy I might be with someone to hold me down
Then I'm changin' my mind, I keep changin' my mind.

Now the right thing to do in fairness to you would be to go away
And maybe someday if I come passing through
You'll let me sit and watch your children play.

I wanna go but I don't know what the future's gonna be
And I'm thinking 'bout the happiness that you would find and wishin' it was me
Now I'm changin' my mind. I keep changin' my mind.

Just can't make up my mind, I keep changin' my mind...

"Charleston Railroad Tavern"

"Charleston Railroad Tavern"

Charleston Railroad Tavern
Sittlin' up till I'm blind
She left on that 5-0-9
Eastern standard blue time.

My baby left this evening
I'd changed all this if I could
But her train just pulled out of sight
I know she's gone for good.

So Charleston Railroad Tavern
Sittlin' up till I'm blind
She left on that 5-0-9
Eastern standard blue time.

I stayed out so many nights
The crowd downtown was fun
But her love had turned to hate
Before I knew the harm I'd done.

Now the laughing tavern crowd is gone
I'm so lonesome I could die
The man just said it's closing time
Guess I'll go home and cry.

So Charleston Railroad Tavern
Sittlin' up till I'm blind
She left on that 5-0-9
Eastern standard blue time...
