A.S Hornby's Guide to Patterns and Usage in English 2nd edition-This Guide, written especially for students of English as a foreign or second language, explains and demonstrates the composition of modern idiomatic English. By means of tables and example sentences, Hornby identifies all those patterns (for the verb, noun, adjective and adverb) that are basic to an understanding of the structures of English sentences. In addition, there are sections on the use of the language to express time-relations, and concepts such as requests, conditions, possibility and obligation.

In this second, revised edition Hornby emphasises the importance of current spoken English by indicating the appropriate stress and pitch features when they form an essential part of the patterns being demonstrated.

The Guide's close grammatical connection with the Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary, in particular the fact that the 25 Verb Patterns summarized in the Dictionary are fully discussed here, make this the ideal companion textbook for students and teachers using the Dictionary.
The new revised edition of this Dictionary has won praise from students and teachers thoughout the world. A dictionary that aims to be of practical use to the foreign learner must be more than an occasional reference for spelling difficulties, pronunciation and the meanings of difficult or new vocabulary. Just as important is a knowledge of how to select new vocabulary for particular contexts and how to put those words together in correct sentence patterns. This Dictionary is the only one that provides detailed information and guidance of this kind, and has proved itself to be as essential to written and oral work as any textbook.

The Verb Patterns demonstrated in full in Hornby's Guide to Patterns and Usage are summarized in the Introduction to the Dictionary, and all verb entries contain cross-references to the appropriate Verb Pattern tables.
The differences between British and American English -in spelling, pronunciation and meaning-are indicated throughout.
The companion grammar to the Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary of Current English.

No one who wishes to benefit fully from the Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary should be without this new revised edition of A.S Hornby's Guide to Patterns and Usage. Here the Dictionary's grammatical and stylistic aspects are explained and demonstrated by means of clear teaching patterns and a wealth of example sentences. Hornby's Guide and Dictionary are together key handbooks to the speaking, reading and writing of modern English.
