"Tapping On The Line"

"Tapping On The Line"

Someone’s messing with the machines
They’ve been left out in the rain
Well it’s strange to come back free of any rust
Dares you to explain
Could you speak a little more clearly on the line
Cold wind keeps blowing from the east
Trans-Atlantic crossings coming to a freeze
I’m in exile with a sign that reads
No one can tell which side of the street
Would I stand a little closer to the line
No one can tell which side to claim
Could you speak a little more clearly once again
Speak a little clearly on the line
Indian summer, cold war skies
Nervous drummers on overbooked flights
Well the chaos grows stronger on the superstition flyway
Looks like we’re spinning up tonight
Could you step a little closer to the line
Splitting heart and mind, broken circuit by design
Well the demand for arms is goin’ through the roof
The scientists are forced to work in the maze
While they tap tap tap tap tapping on the line
Could you speak a little clearly one more time
While you tap tap tap tap tapping on the line

Leave the heart of the city
For the heart of the world
Leave the heart of this city
Love the way her trust unfurls
Follow her hand to the dark end of the street
Cross in the night, invisible to the electric eye
Sippin' on a little Night Train
Slippin' in to stay warm
Sleep by day, move at night
Sleep by day, keep moving, moving at night
Sleep by day, move at night
Follow her hand to the dark end of the street
Cross in the night, become invisible in a blink of an eye
Out past the border patrol (Out past the downtown city glow)
Who's thunderbird's no match (Cross the Santa Cruz and I-10)
A helicopter shadow follows you (Past the cancerous sprawl)
Way out past the downtown city glow (Into fields of thorns)
Cross the Santa Cruz (Through the Rincon Mountains)
I-10 through the Rincon's and Cochise Stronghold (And Cochise Stronghold)
South of the Chiricahuas (South of the Chiricahuas)
Drifting and drifting...
Drifting and drifting... (Drifting and drifting...)
Drifting and drifting... (Drifting...)
Drifting...

"The Guns Of Brixton"
(originally by The Clash)

"The Guns Of Brixton"
(originally by The Clash)

When they kick out your front door
How you gonna come?
With your hands on your head
Or on the trigger of your gun

When the law break in
How you gonna go?
Shot down on the pavement
Or waiting in death row

You can crush us
You can bruise us
But you'll have to answer to
Oh, Guns of Brixton

The money feels good
And your life you like it well
But surely your time will come
As in heaven, as in hell

You see, he feels like Ivan
Born under the Brixton sun
His game is called survivin'
At the end of the harder they come

When the law break in
How you gonna go?
Shot down on the pavement
Or waiting in death row

You can crush us
You can bruise us
Have to answer to
Oh, Guns of Brixton

Y si una bala roza tu frente
Doblas la vida, matas el tiempo
Gracias a ella María negra
Que te protege de este mal tiempo
Nunca te rindas, piensa en tu gente
María negra, seca tu frente
Santa María, María Negra
Cuida tu tiempo, cuida tu suerte

You know it means no mercy
They caught him with a gun
No need for the Black Maria
Goodbye to the Brixton sun

You can crush us, bruise us
But you'll have to answer to
Oh-the guns of Brixton

When they kick out your front doors
How you gonna come?
With your hands on your head
Or on the trigger of your gun

You can crush us, bruise us
But you'll have to answer to
Oh, the guns of Brixton
Oh, the guns of Brixton
Oh, the guns of Brixton
Oh, the guns of Brixton
Oh, the guns of Brixton

"The News About William"

"The News About William"

4 in the morning the sidewalk's asleep
Dogs on the porch,
Spiders on the leaf
Shipwrecked by night sailing through days
Nobody noticed the slipping away
Connecting the dots with thorns in his side
Boarded up the Windows with pain and with pride
The music box broken that once was his soul
Its sad little song spinning out of control
Then came the storm that washed the roads out
Closed both his eyes and pointed straight south
Second line drums marched into the sea
While the clouds overhead cried "mutiny"
They parted for Cathy and her bitter news
As her words fail and the sky grew dim
Recalled how close to that exit I've been
Ours not to reply, ours not to reason why
The news about William
The lifeline retreats
Desire for release
The thorns in his side

"The Ride, Pt. II"

Beneath the neon hub of downtown
The local hotel ghosts blow back around
Descend on those drugstore cowboy nights
Cling to the bar, then disappear from sight

Head back to the daily regime
Where the late night graveyard shift dampens your dreams
Bitten by the desire and the spell
That leaves you stranded out on the other side of town

"The Town & Miss Lorraine"

"The Town & Miss Lorraine"

I found a book in a washed up ship
Reading the notes the captain stitched
Inside this suit of dust I wait
As the waves carry me back to shore

My neighbor Miss Lorraine commands
The town's attention when she wants
She has a way of making everyone she meets
Feel lost and lone with no direction home

There's a bad accident on the interstate
A snake of engine oil reaches out

The fire inside my soul is nearly flickered out
So I order another [?]

Sliding into the sea
With cynicism and rum
Watching Miss Lorraine
Smoking alone with the moon

"The Vanishing Mind"

"The Vanishing Mind"

On the longest day
The vanishing mind
Knows not when the day ends
Who could care for you
Who could understand
In the room sealed shut
You're not what you were
So much sweeter now
That there's nothing left to
Remember you
It's what brought you here
It's what keeps you here
Who could care for you
Who could understand
Know not when the day ends or begins anymore
In the hallway and waiting again
Here we are, here we sit
The light turning grey
Your smile brings me back
To the longest day
The vanishing mind

"Thrown To The Wild"

Cold linoleum just seems to amplify
Every sob, every sound, every sigh
Down at the bus station waiting for the red eye
Tears of a stranger no method to this madness
No proof of sadness
Do you steer clear
Or do you turn around

Home's waiting like a motherless child
From the chaos we're thrown into the wild
In an instant it could all go away
Or we could choose to keep holding on to the pain

Do you steer clear
Wide glances in the cracked and dirty mirrors
One last time
Console the town and their future
As it slides away

"Trigger"

Walking south along the river
Never had he found that twist of pleasure
Remembering times when they were younger
Setting the town on fire
And watching as his fellow friends
Fell apart in the wake
Claiming it was all just a mistake
When his finger pulled the trigger
And he shot everyone
It was all just a mistake
When he shot everyone
Nothing will stand in the way
When hunger hasn't eaten for days
Scrounges around where ends meet
Then disappears into the fray
He hopes for a while he can reconcile
But the pain that never dies
The ghosts of his family constantly
Gnawing at his inside
He pulls out a worn out photo
And an old handmade gun
Wishes it was he who was frying
When he set the whole town on fire
He walks off crying
He shot everyone

"Tulsa Telephone Book"

"Tulsa Telephone Book"

Have you read any good telephone books lately?
If you ain't, let me recommend one
I've already read that Tulsa telephone book through thirteen times
If you don't know any last names, it ain't much fun

Readin' that Tulsa Telephone Book
Can drive a man insane
Especially if that girl you're lookin' for
Has no last name
I've got to find her and tell her
That I don't want our love to end
So I'm readin' that Tulsa Telephone Book again

I was in Tulsa and didn't have anything going
She lived in Tulsa and didn't have anything on
She said "My name's Juanita"
I said "My name's J.B."
I awoke the very next morning, and she was gone

All the Tulsa operators know my voice know
They've got to know just how long I've been alone
If you meet a girl named Juanita with some ribbons in her hair
Could you tell her that she's wanted on the phone?

Readin' that Tulsa Telephone Book
Can drive a guy insane
Especially if that girl you're lookin' for
Has no last name
I've got to find her and tell her
That I don't want our love to end
So I'm readin' that Tulsa Telephone Book again
So I'm readin' that Tulsa Telephone Book again
