The f.u.'s - kill for christ
20-08-2010 16:30
Classic first-wave hardcore punk from Boston, the F.U.'s' debut release (after appearing on the seminal This Is Boston, Not L.A. compilation), Kill for Christ , is a thrashy, amateurish rattle that works thanks to the band's reckless enthusiasm. With caffeine-overdose tempos that nearly collapse on every track, ultracheap static buzz production, and cigarette-hoarse mob choruses, Kill for Christ could be considered a textbook case of hardcore America 1983, right down to the Pushead artwork on the cover (a bluntly blasphemous rendering of Jesus as a cigar-chomping machine-gun killer). The F.U.'s are angry punks, but behind their stiff beats and petulant riffs is plenty of snotty exuberance, a barely concealed joy that proves that the band is rocking as much for fun as for revolution. The songs take on many of the same concerns that contemporary hardcore acts complained about, but they're not afraid to skewer their own audience right along with the yuppies, hippies, and fascist club owners. "Trendy Nazi Hypocrites," "Peer Police," and the anthemic "F.U." all take a bite out of smug, politically naive punks who blindly trade the conformity of schools and parents for the conformity of mohawk hairdos and Maximum Rock N Roll magazine.

The f.u.'s - my america
20-08-2010 16:32
The F.U.'s stood out in the early 80s hardcore scene because they went against the scene's political grain. While most of the bands had decidedly leftist leanings, the F.U.'s were patriotic and even nationalistic. Were they being ironic? Maybe a little, I think. I think they were just so fed up with the self righteous and self satisfied folk in the scene and went out of their way to spit in their faces. How far out of their way they went, that's the question. Musically, this is some of the angriest HC from the day. It's just a few steps from being as f***ed up as Void. These guys could hold their own against SSD. It's the real deal.--Amazon.com
This review is in reference to the F.U.'s - My America vinyl copy I owned 20 years ago and ever since I lost it Ive been searching for a copy ever since. That should tell you enough about it to hopefully inspire you to get it, because BUDDY...IT ROCKS!!! The words that come to mind are: FIERCE...BISTERING...BOSTON...HARDCORE. Sell the wife and kids, buy this riot starting masterpiece and pray...I mean PRAY to the Great Spirit of Hardcore Freakouts that this has the "Kill for Christ" EP tacked on as an extra chunky treat. Now, GET YOUR GREASY LITTLE PIECE OF PLASTIC OUT AND BUY THIS NOW!!! Believe me, you wont regret it...(but your neighbors will)--Amazon.com

The f.u.'s - do we really want to hurt you
20-08-2010 16:33
The ~censored~' FU's from Boston are a band we love very much but don't know much about. One of the earliest Boston hardcore outfits, the FU's consisted of John Sox, Steve Grimes, Bob Furapples, and Wayne Maestri. Their first exposure was on the This is Boston Not L.A. compilation along with fellow bands Jerry's Kids and Gang Green. The FU's continued their cynical, misanthropic attack on the world with their 3rd and final LP, 1984's Do We Really Want to Hurt You? - an obvious jab at the new wave pop being passed off as alternative at the time. For this album, they posed on a tank for the cover. The record is still hardcore, but shows obvious signs of rock-ification.--KFTH

Really red - teaching you the fear
20-08-2010 16:37
The explosive and turbulent Texas of the late 70s produced a wealth of great hardcore with the likes of the Dicks and the Big Boys, Right up there was Houston's Really Red spitting out thier own brand of political hardcore. This, their debut release and first LP is utterly mind blowing from start to finish. Their songs follow no convention, boiling in the same musical melting pot where the Minutemen and early Wire swam. The vocals often call to mind D. Boon, who also could convey fierce emotion whether he was singing or
ing, joking or railing... The title track, with its menacingly anxious bass line and shakily spoken lyrics "Take one chicano with his hands cuffed behind his back" is one of the most haunting political punk songs ever written.

Big boys - the fat elvis
20-08-2010 16:41
The Fat Elvis...Released in conjunction with The Skinny Elvis, Fat Elvis compiles the later Big Boys releases -- Fun, Fun, Fun, Lullabies, and No Matter -- in one handy disc.
Coming out of the then-overlooked Austin, TX, punk scene of the early '80s, the Big Boys combined two irresistible rock styles into one feverish mix: raging, speedy guitars and fat, funky backbeats. And although they went on to make a few so-so recordings, never really living up to their early promise, it's difficult not to be supportive of what the Big Boys tried to do in the start of the hardcore era, wherein the sexiness of a funky rhythm section disappeared amongst the ultra-fast tempos and sexless pummeling. On their wonderful EP Fun, Fun, Fun, the Boys tore up Kool & the Gang's "Hollywood's Swinging" like it was their birthright, and the transition from speedcore ranting to danceable funk & roll was rarely more eloquently rendered.

Ill repute - what happened then
20-08-2010 16:42
When people talk about the glory days of early USHC, ILL REPUTE barely get a mention, which is a pity 'cos they were a fine band. Probably the leading lights of the Nardcore scene, they blasted out rather manic thrash but with the requesent hooks to keep it from becoming a blur. Were they a straight edge band? I ask 'cos a couple of the songs seem to veer in that direction, especially the fantastic "Fill It Up." The more I listen to this the more I think they're really underrated. Only one complaint - it seems to have been mastered from the vinyl. Mystic Records up to their legendary shenanigans!

Die Kreuzen - 1984 LP
20-08-2010 16:45
This is hands-down the most underrated hardcore full-length ever. Perhaps the best Midwest hardcore LP (no, I'm not forgetting Negative Approach), Die Kreuzen's debut album is a total freak-out of fast, oddly arranged songs and maniacal vocals. With the exception of Siege, no US band has come close to the demented, raw ferocity of Dan Kubinski. He sounds like a demon from another planet (or at least Italy). The music has an edge to it to, at times riffing it up Minor Threat style, othertimes more choppy and bass-driven like the Necros, but often with a weird tempo or time-change that reminds you these ~censored~ were from Wisconsin! (I don't know what that means). A great thing about this record is that it isn't that hard to find, and there's no reason everyone shouldn't be rocking out to it on a regular basis. I wasn't surprised to learn recently that Charles Maggio imitated the vocals on this LP while recording the first Rorschach LP, and I'm willing to bet Pushead was listening carefully too [I was right, see below]. Get this or die incomplete.--KFTH
If the vocals weren't nasty enough on that last platter, wait till your ears get tarnished by the clamorous siege of Die Kreuzen's Dan Kubinski. Blistered tonsils split open as he wails out the spit paced growling, a titanic demon which holds your mind in fear. The sheer grounded flavor of the grievous voice makes your curiosity rage in what the next track offers.
Completely insane besets of missiling quickness and savage bass plucks highlight Die Kreuzens debut album. Brutal perfomances of unrelenting fury ravages spasms of exhilating assertiveness. Die Kreuzen force feed 21 alarming tracks (each a highlight in its own right), filling all combinations of vigorous energy and full tilt expressionism. Well-produced with crazed outer graphics, this exceptional platter haunts as it storms with speed, velocity, and engulfing vocal strength. Finally the true slice. On Touch & Go Records...of course.

Municipal waste - hazardous mutation
20-08-2010 16:49
Born in the sewers of Richmond, Virginia during 2000, with the aim of spreading the shred, Municipal Waste played their first gig at a Richmond New Year's Eve Keg party in 2000/2001. Blamed for inciting a small riot, Brendan Trache, Andy Harris, Tony Foresta and Ryan Waste went down a storm. As a result, the four swiftly started touring in small clubs; their blazing fast, raw thrash drew from the tradition of DRI, Suicidal Tendencies, 'Animosity'-era Corrosion Of Conformity, Nuclear Assault and Attitude Adjustment.
In 2005 Municipal Waste signed to Earache records and recorded the 'Hazardous Mutation' album, featuring such two-minute wonders as the mighty 'Terror Shark' ,'The Thrashing Of The Christ', 'Bangover' and the undisputed Municipal Waste anthem 'Unleash The Bastards'.

Battalion of saints - death-r-us
20-08-2010 16:57
Fast, quick, and brutal -- that was the Battalion of Saints way, perhaps all the more necessary considering the band's fairly conservative surroundings in San Diego. Collecting the original Fighting Boys EP and Second Coming album from the early '80s, plus a number of other random tracks from compilations and singles, Death-R-Us kicks out the early American hardcore jams darn well. While never on the level of Minor Threat or the like, the Saints did the business in a series of short, sharp shocks. The production isn't as thin as some contemporaneous releases out there -- a definite plus for those looking for more oomph in their music -- but the reason for listening is singer George Anthony . He's got a knack for good choruses and has a fairly clear voice. Rather than simple braying, he actually makes an effort to forcefully sing, at least from time to time. The bandmembers, meanwhile, mostly just serve up your basic catchy bash and crash, but are sharp enough to throw in some quick soloing or weird harmonics on guitar to make things interested. In a smart tip of the hat to not entirely unexpected roots, a competent rip through Motorhead 's definitive hit "Ace of Spades" pops up towards the end. Anthony's vocals can't match Lemmy's unique growl, but it's good fun nonetheless. As a bonus, two wholly new songs by the mid-'90s lineup (with the additional "A.D." as a distinguishing difference) appear at the start.

Jerry's kids - is this my world?
20-08-2010 16:59
Boston hardcore/thrash metallists Jerry's Kids (named after a long-running fund-raising organization that comedian Jerry Lewis formed for children with cerebral palsy) formed originally in 1981, rising out of a local scene that included such bands as SS Decontrol, the F.U.'s, Freeze, Negative FX, and Gang Green (the latter of which would often swap members with Jerry's Kids off and on). Jerry's Kids caught their first break in 1982, when they were featured on a compilation of local talent (This Is Boston, Not L.A.), which created a buzz for the band beyond just Boston. 1983 saw the release of their debut album for X-Claim Records, Is This My World. The group spilt from the label shortly thereafter, leading to the album being shortly out of print, before the Taang! label reissued it. 1989 saw the release of their second and final release, Kill Kill Kill, before splitting up. Although there were plenty of switches in the Jerry's Kids lineup, the best-known included members Rick Jones on vocals and bass, Rockin' Bob Cenci on lead guitar, Dave Aronson on rhythm guitar, and Jack Clark on drums.
