Festival je smišljen 1939. godine "u inat" venecijanskom, koji je bio pod uticajem fašista. Prvi put je održan 1946. godine, a tokom 61 godine, bio je otkazan samo tri puta - od 1948. do 1950. godine, i to zbog nedostatka novca.

Prvih nekoliko godina, Kan je, među slavnima, prolazio prilično nezapaženo. Tek od 1949. godine, filmske zvezde počele su da dolaze na Kroazetu, pa su se te godine "crvenim tepihom" prošetali Tajron Pauer, Orson Vels, Erol Flin i drugi.

Slavna "BB", Brižit Bardo, počastila je Kan svojim prisustvom prvi put 1953. godine.

Mnogi misle da su toples fotke slavnih samo način da izmame pažnju. Ovaj trend potekao je od starlete Simone Silve, koja je 1954. skinula gornji deo bikinija i bacila ga pred Roberta Mičama. Može se reći da je Silva lansirala trend, na kojem će mnoge glumice decenijama kasnije zasnivati karijeru...


Prva žena koja je osvojila Zlatnu palmu bila je rediteljka Džejn Kempion, kojoj je priznanje pripalo 1993. godine, za dramu "Klavir".

Možda "najjače" od svih priznanja ikada dodeljenih u Kanu je "Palma svih palmi", koja je dodeljena Ingmaru Bergmanu 1997. godine. Međutim, švedski režiser nije se pojavio da je primi.

One of the last bills signed by President Lincoln authorizes pushing the Union Pacific Railroad across the wilderness to California. Lorenzo Rafael (played by Pedro Armendáriz) is living with María Candelaria (Dolores Del Río) and they plan to get married until tragedy occurs as she gets ill and Lorenzo Rafael has to break in to a store and steals medicine and a dress for Maria for their wedding day. The owner of the store: Don Damián (Miguel Inclán) wants Maria for him, and incarcerates Lorenzo Rafael. Maria tries to get money to put Lorenzo out of jail as she poses for a painter in Xochimilco, but a confusion implodes tragic events.

Forget what you've heard. "Brief Encounter" is an extremely violent film. In fact, it is a violence that no Tarantino or Guy Ritchie could ever come close to. Celia Johnson, as its heroine, Laura, says as much herself: "I've fallen in love. I'm an ordinary woman. I didn't think such violent things could happen to ordinary people."

One of the first British films to have praise heaped on it abroad, it is shot in noirish black and white to the music of Rachmaninov. David Lean ably directed Noel Coward's script for this intensely passionate film in which almost nothing happens. In short, Laura gets a piece of grit in her eye (those beastly trains!) and falls desperately in love with the kind stranger (Trevor Howard) who removes it. Romance follows over a series of chance, then planned, meetings all given drama by the emphasis on their brevity.

It is told in flashback in an imaginary confession to her husband (Cyril Raymond) whom she dares not tell out of profound compassion. Without the insight her narration gives we would perhaps see nothing at all in the railway station buffet where both Stanley Holloway and Joyce Carey remind us of the invasive triviality of the everyday with a suspicious intimation that the lower classes have no emotional life.

If you can stomach this and the excruciatingly affected portrayal of the English middle classes, you'll have, at the very least, a lump in your throat. Less cynical souls will weep buckets.

Set in bombed-out, post-war Vienna, Holly Martins, a writer of pulp Westerns arrives as a penniless guest of his childhood chum Harry Lime, only to find him dead. Martins develops the ultimate conspiracy theory after learning of a "third man" present at the time of Harry's death, running into interference from investigating British officer Major Calloway and falling head-over-heels for Harry's grief-stricken lover, Anna.

The story begins, as do all good fables, with the words "Once upon a time". Young Toto (Francesco Golisano) is discovered in a cabbage patch by an elderly woman. She raises and tutors him. At her death he is put into an orphanage. He leaves the orphanage with a positive attitude towards life and an irrepressible smile. After an incident when his bag is stolen he comes into contact with a member of Milan's poor who offers him a bed for the night in a tent land on the outskirts of town. The presence of Toto energises the homeless community and when the tents are destroyed in a wind storm, the residents are galvanised into building a small shanty town. Against this down-and-out backdrop de Sica throws some greedy landowners and the film becomes something of a battle between the rich and the poor. Not only has Toto got a magical soul, but through divine intervention he receives the power to grant real wishes, a focus of the last third of the movie. The power is a great gift but it comes with its own problems.
This is not simply a film about the trauma of poverty in post-war Italy. Although principally a comedy there are times where, almost surreptitiously, it becomes a stinging indictment on behaviour of the big business after the war. The poor go about their little lives with a modicum of dignity and a honesty, but once oil is discovered in the shanty town big business sets out to protect its own interest at the expense of this well-ordered society.

Midsummer night, 1894, in northern Sweden. The complex strictures of class bind a man and a woman. Miss Julie, the inexperienced but imperious daughter of the manor, deigns to dance at the servants' party. She's also drawn to Jean, a footman who has traveled, speaks well, and doesn't kowtow. He is engaged to Christine, a servant, and while she sleeps, Jean and Miss Julie talk through the night in the kitchen. For part of the night it's a power struggle, for part it's the baring of souls, and by dawn, they want to break the chains of class and leave Sweden together. When Christine wakes and goes off to church, Jean and Miss Julie have their own decisions to make.
