This collection of Baroque music consists of works by a composer that Segovia ceaselessly promoted throughout his career: J.S. Bach. As his compatriot Pablo Casals's performances of the Bach cello suites added so much to the great composer's reputation, Segovia's performances of Bach's lute suites and other works greatly enhanced the public's perception of the Leipzig master as the most "universal" of composers. His playing imbues Bach's music with a very special warmth and humanity. This disc is one of the most important and rewarding in the Segovia discography.

This disc features two guitar concerts that were composed expressly for Segovia--Rodrigo's Fantasia para un Gentilhombre and Manual Ponce's Concierto del Sur. Both works have been recorded many times by virtually every major guitarist, but there is something uniquely satisfying in hearing them played by the man who started the "classical guitar craze" of modern times. The Fantasia in particular, with its modern take on Baroque tunes, suits Segovia's stylish and elegant playing perfectly. A slice of history, then, and a satisfying music experience in its own right.

It's a strange fact, but many of the most popular Spanish guitar pieces are actually transcriptions of piano originals. Of course, many of these actually use the piano in imitation of the guitar, and if a guitarist of Segovia's ability had been around at the turn of the century, there might have been a lot more authentic guitar music written than we now have. Segovia's particular gift, evident in the Albeniz pieces, is to make this piano music sound like guitar originals. In short, this essential CD contains many of the most famous Spanish guitar favorites in inimitable performances.

This charming collection of Baroque favorites consists largely of transcriptions of keyboard music by Bach, Handel, Scarlatti, and Purcell as well as some original lute works. During the Baroque period it was common to arrange the same music to suit different instruments as necessary, so there's nothing unusual in Segovia's practice here. The Scarlatti pieces are particularly brilliant, with Segovia demonstrating just how Spanish the great Italian composer really became after years as private tutor to the Queen of Spain. The entire recital makes for one of the most satisfying of Segovia's many Baroque compilations and a great way to get to know this great artist.

When Segovia first began playing guitar at the beginning of the 20th century, the instrument was regarded with some suspicion in Spanish music circles as belonging to the "lower classes" of society, at least compared to the Spanish lute, or vihuela. So Segovia had something to prove when he began playing the great classics of the Spanish Baroque vihuela composers on the guitar, and his conviction certainly comes across in this excellent recital. As many of his other recordings demonstrate, Segovia really responded to Baroque music's intricacy, style, and wit. If fact, much of this music was almost completely unknown until Segovia got his hands on it, and we can all be thankful that he did.

Manuel Ponce was one of the 20th century's finest composers of guitar music as well as a close friend of Segovia's. His sonatas are excellent pieces that achieved their well-earned popularity largely thanks to Segovia's advocacy. He's particularly adept in the slow movements, in which he creates that sustained, singing line so difficult to achieve on the guitar. To listen to these performances is to be present at the birth of a grand tradition, and Segovia plays the music with all the love and enthusiasm you could possibly ask for.

Subtitled "Guitar Études," this entertaining collection consists entirely of "exercises" ranging from the simple to the most fantastically virtuosic. Like Chopin's "études," however, the term itself does not mean that the music is in any way sterile or academic, and even if it were, Segovia could make it sound like the greatest stuff in the world. His special brand of virtuosity never loses sight of the music's poetry or humanity. Although less well-known than much other Spanish guitar music, this is one of Segovia's very finest recordings.
